The mid-range Klana Beach Resort is perched on a hilly promontory that houses the Teluk Kemang Observatory. The observatory's telescopes are an appealing feature that guests can make use of, but the hotel's Muslim-friendly regulations, including dress codes, lack of alcohol, and separate pools for men and women will not appeal to most westerners. The 85 rooms have dated linens, but they're spacious and come with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Boardwalks on either side of the hotel lead down to two beaches, but the uphill hike back is on steep staircases. Travelers looking for fewer rules and more places to drink should compare prices with the Avillion Admiral Cove, which has its own little yacht club.
Scene
Mid-range hotel and astronomical observatory that caters to Muslim guests
If not for the towering observatory looming behind the hotel, Klana Beach Resort Port Dickson would look like countless others. Inside the lobby, the connection is clear, with telescopes on display like sculptures flanking a rounded archway that leads to the four-story building's elevators. A lounge area with red-and-black armchairs sits opposite a front desk covered in plain metal panels. Tiny lights mimic stars in recessed sections of the black-painted ceiling, while recitations from the Quran and Islamic nasyid music plays throughout the common spaces.
Location
Adjacent to the Teluk Kemang Observatory, walking distance to beaches
The hotel is on a hilly promontory between Teluk Kemang Beach and Pantai Purnama Beach at the 8th mile along Port Dickson's main coastal road. It's set back from everything else, behind other resorts and condo complexes, sharing a parking lot with its affiliated Teluk Kemang Observatory. There are a couple of restaurants nearby and the Port Dickson Ostrich Farm, a popular family destination, is within a 20-minute walk inland, though most guests opt for driving. The Tanjung Tuan Forest Reserve and Rachardo Lighthouse are about a 16-minute drive away, and it's about a 24-minute drive into central Port Dickson.
Rooms
Rooms with mini-fridges and apartments with kitchenettes
The hotel has 85 rooms that pair mostly contemporary decor with a cosmic flair. Majority have artwork depicting images from space above shiny metal headboards in a white and gray color palette, accented by dated orange, red, or gold fabrics. Built-in desks support flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges along one wall, with small sitting areas that have tables and chairs for two. Free Wi-Fi, safes, irons, and electric tea kettles alongside tea and coffee also come standard. The bathrooms have large walk-in showers but could use better cleaning around the tiles and fixtures. Upgraded rooms have sea views. There are also a few family-friendly two- and three-bedroom apartments, which add kitchenettes with microwaves and bathrooms with rainfall showers.
Features
Observatory with guest access to telescopes, outdoor pools, buffet restaurant, free breakfast
The hotel's most distinguishing feature is the adjacent Teluk Kemang Observatory, which guests can access to view the night sky through its 24-inch telescope, as well as a solar telescope for daytime observing (subject to weather). The two outdoor pools are divided by a privacy wall, with one side for men and the other for women only. There's also a kiddy pool. Sun loungers are absent (dress codes are enforced), but there are a few tables with umbrella shades scattered around the sun deck. The Klana Coffee House serves a buffet of local Negeri Sembilan food, with some a la carte western options, along with non-alcoholic beverages. A free buffet breakfast is included in all rates. Other facilities include a ballroom, a small theater, and three modern meeting rooms. Free parking is available.
