Bottom Line

The 55-room Hotel Pompei Resort is a good mid-range option for travelers looking to be close to Pompeii's archaeological site, as it's about a 15-to 20-minute walk to town and the entrance to the ruins. Rooms have a colorful design scheme that won't suit all tastes, but they're well-equipped with minibars, flat-screen TVs, and hydromassage showers. A well-reviewed restaurant and bar are on-site, plus there are a lovely garden and patio with ample space. Don't let the resort name fool you though: There's no pool, gym, or spa facilities here. Travelers who want to be closer to the ruins and more subdued room decor should consider the Hotel Forum Pompei, which also offers a free breakfast but has higher rates.

Scene

Colorful, quirky interiors and elegant back garden

Though resort is in the name, this hotel is a simple affair with few amenities but a convenient location that's a bit removed from the bustle of Pompeii's center. Interiors won't suit everyone's taste, but they're bursting with personality thanks to boldly painted walls, colorful upholstery, and large pieces of artwork. Though certainly loud, the lobby and bar are contemporary, while the slightly toned-down restaurant has more dated decor consisting of red-cushioned chairs with brass frames, burnt-orange curtains, and green sponge-effect walls. Easily the most attractive space is the stunning stone patio with modern seating surrounded by cacti, flowers, and palms. Affordable rates make this a good hotel a good value for couples who don't mind the quirky design.

Location

Located within walking distance of the ruins and train station

The hotel is a bit removed from the buzzing center of Pompeii, but it's a 15-minute walk into town and about 20 minutes from the entrance to the ruins. A supermarket is about eight minutes away on foot, and nearby Via Lepanto has good cafes within a 10-minute walk. Guests going into the center of town can also hop on a free scheduled shuttle run by the hotel. Travelers can also hop on the Circumvesuviana railway -- the station is a 12-minute walk away -- to visit Naples, which is 45 minutes by train. Parking is on-site and free for guests.

Rooms

Modern and colorful rooms with hydromassage showers

The 55 contemporary and decent-sized rooms are designed in a similar style as the lobby, with lots of color in the sponge-effect walls and linens, dark stone tile floors, and varying decor. Artist Franco Gracco's paintings decorate the spaces and are inspired by sleep and four segments of the day. All rooms come with desks and chairs, while Junior Suites add a sitting area. Suites are large and have separate living areas. Many rooms have balconies, either overlooking the garden or Mt. Vesuvius (be sure to request which one you'd like). Note that rooms facing the road can by noisy, and some guests have complained of noise from neighboring rooms. Each room is air-conditioned and offers a free in-room safe, flat-screen satellite TV, and minibars. Compact bathrooms are even more loud with red or orange and green tiling, but they come with excellent hydromassage showers. Also provided are heated towel racks, basic toiletries, and magnifying mirrors.

Features

Well-reviewed restaurant and pretty patio

Despite its name, don't expect any typical resort features here: There's no pool, gym, or wellness facilities. The restaurant, however, is well-reviewed and features regional (Campanian) and Mediterranean dishes. The eatery also serves a continental breakfast spread, but it's not included in all rates. There's also a bar, but it doesn't offer much in ambience. For a more attractive setting, guests can head outdoors to the lovely garden patio. Wi-Fi is available and free throughout the property.
