Porto Playa Condo Hotel & Beachclub

From the outside, Porto Playa showcases hacienda-style architecture with stonework and a traditional thatch roof. Green palm trees, ferns, and bushes are everywhere from the front entrance to the rooftop. Indoors, the small reception area is more about business than relaxing. There's a built-in corner couch topped with khaki and green pillows, along with a reception counter. Beach towels and umbrellas are set out for guests' use. Outside, the grounds resemble a lush rain forest. Short white walls keep winding paved pathways separate from green islands overflowing with local plants. A long and narrow swimming pool winds through the grounds, punctuated by the occasional waterfall. The scene is definitely quiet, though not stifling. Most guests spend their days on the beach or exploring nearby 5th Avenue.

Porto Playa Condo Hotel & Beachclub has a convenient location for those who don't mind walking a full block to the beach and around the corner to the tourist destination of 5th Avenue, packed with restaurants, bars, and local shops. The street where the property is located is quiet and walkable. Underground parking is free. Expect a solid 45-minute drive to Cancun International Airport.

There are 20 air-conditioned condo-style units spread out in three-story buildings throughout the small property. Guests can choose between one- or two-bedroom units, or upgrade to the Penthouse for three full bedrooms. The decor is modern and stylish, with substantial wood furniture, built-in contemporary couches, and sleek chaise lounges. Floors are laid with decorative neutral tile and walls are painted white. Mexican-inspired artwork adds interest. Technology includes flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Full kitchens are tricked out with stainless steel appliances and all the gadgets and gear a private chef would need to cook a three-course Mexican feast (which can be arranged for a fee). The refrigerator is stocked with soda, beer, and juice, but these cost extra -- though there's ample space for storing your own food at no additional charge. Huge bathrooms have double bowl sinks on spacious vanities, large step-in showers, and wall-mounted hairdryers. The Penthouse has a rooftop whirlpool and BBQ facilities.

Features at Porto Playa are modern and convenient. There's a long and narrow rooftop pool with an adjacent hot tub. Sun loungers and tropical landscaping are comfortable touches -- ocean views are distant and obstructed but still nice. The second swimming pool that runs through the grounds is even more narrow and pretty shallow. Little ones like it for splashing, but it's more of a decorative feature than a truly functional pool. There aren't any restrooms or changing facilities by the pools, so guests have to run back to their condos for privacy.

The gym is beautiful and spacious with natural light. There's a boxing studio, up-to-date cardio equipment, and spinning bikes. An adjacent juice and smoothie bar sells cold drinks and energy bars. The spa isn't huge, but it does have a mani/pedi area and several treatment rooms. Guests can use the locker rooms and showers if they arrive early or want to depart after check out.

There isn't an on-site restaurant or bar, though there are dining options at the beach club and within short walking distance. Staff can arrange private chef services or organize tours and excursions.

The Porto Playa is located one full block from the beach, but the resort does offer a private beach club on the public beach. The water is calm, clear, and blue. Note that boat owners dock their vessels on the sand -- meaning that swimmers have to navigate around ropes and boats. Facilities include soft day beds, chic sun loungers, and a full-service bar and restaurant. There's seating indoors and on the outdoor patio overlooking the water. Guests wanting to parasail, jet ski, or rent water equipment can do so with vendors on the beach.
