Bottom Line

The 399-room, upper-middle-range Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel at
Station Square benefits from its Station Square location, which is directly across the
Monongahela River from many attractions in downtown. It’s a nice property with great views
of the river and city skyline and its distinctive, sharply angled atrium features a full-service restaurant and bar. The 30,000 square feet of function
space keeps the hotel hopping with business functions. Rooms are comfortably
spaced and generally clean and well-maintained, although some guests have
reported minor housekeeping and maintenance issues. A free shuttle to downtown Pittsburg is a nice extra perk. A stylish alternative could be HYATT house Pittsburgh-South Side, which can have lower rates though its location is farther down the Monongahela River.

Scene

Busy chain hotel with a diverse mix of guests attending meetings and sporting events

The soaring atrium in this hotel creates a distinctive
ambience that’s different from many other hotels in the area. The sharply angled atrium
includes several stories of windows at the entrance with industrial-like black
pipes and exposed ductwork along the ceiling and walls. It’s a
cavernous yet inviting space that features a round bar, full-service
restaurant, and more seating arrangements than anyone would care to count.
Polished marble, hardwood, and bright blue carpet with large, snowflake
patterns cover the floors of the space, made up of many shapes and colors.
The large inventory of meeting space stays busy with various functions, and the
large hotel can get hectic on football weekends and during tournaments at the
nearby soccer complex. Some guests like to stay here simply to enjoy the
impressive views of the river and city skyline -- armchairs are placed in front of floor-to-ceiling windows in the hallways, so guests can linger and take in the view. Others are drawn by the location that offers easy access to downtown Pittsburgh and the
surrounding waterfront area.

Location

On the waterfront at Station Square, directly across the river from downtown attractions

The hotel is situated on the waterfront of the Monongahela River at the popular
Station Square. It's directly across from the heart of
downtown and its major attractions. Station Square has several restaurants and
shops that are only a two- or three-minute walk from the hotel's front doors. The Monongahela Incline and
Gateway Clipper Fleet of river tour boats also are about a three-minute walk,
while the Station Square subway station is a five-minute walk. The Highmark
Stadium soccer complex is a six-minute walk. Multiple downtown sights can be reached via car or the
hotel shuttle in about 10 minutes, including PNC Park,
Heinz Field, CONSOL Energy Center, Strip District, Point State Park, Rivers
Casino, and David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Duquesne University, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Pittsburgh are also an eight- to 12-minute drive. Public transit travel times
generally are at least double the driving times. Pittsburgh International Airport is a 25- to 30-minute drive, or over an
hour via public transportation.

Rooms

Pleasant and comfortable but with some minor housekeeping issues

Guest rooms at this Sheraton are tasteful if not quite upscale. Decor include soft gold walls,
padded headboards, and patterned carpet. Textiles are in soft neutral shades, such as the beige-and-rust-colored
striped drapes and white bedding. Armchairs are either in butterscotch leather or blue fabric. Dark-brown, matching furniture includes
nightstands and dresser/desk combos with glass tops. Desks have media plug-ins
and office chairs. Pittsburgh-theme photos and prints decorate some walls adding just a hint of color. Standard amenities include free bottled water, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and electronic safes. White-tile bathrooms are average size and feature spacious wood vanities with light granite tops in front of wall-spanning mirrors. Basic shower/tub combos are partitioned with a curtain and toiletries are provided. At 310 square feet, Traditional Guest Rooms are comfortably sized and come in king or two double bed options. Deluxe River View rooms are 345 square feet. Suites range from 476 to 676 square feet and include a sleeper sofa and living room area.  Many rooms feature impressive river and city skyline views, but some overlook the atrium. Most guests report their rooms to be clean with comfortable beds, but some have complained about minor housekeeping and maintenance issues, such as inadequately cleaned rooms and noisy heating units. Lower rooms are also more apt to hear noise from the nearby trains. Club Guest Rooms include access to the
exclusive club lounge that offers free breakfast, hors d’oeuvres, beverages,
and office supplies. Wi-Fi is only free to SPG members who book directly
through Starwood websites or apps.

Features

Free local shuttle, indoor swimming pool, and a charge for breakfast

Features at Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel are convenient and add a lot of appeal. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served at Trackside, the full-service restaurant in the lobby. Lighter fare is served for lunch and dinner at the lobby bar, and a coffee shop offers Starbucks coffee and to-go items throughout the day. Note that breakfast isn't included in room rates. The indoor pool is spacious and has an adjacent whirlpool and loungers. Several cardio machines and free weights are available in the fitness center. The 24-hour business center offers
remote printing and three computer stations with Internet access. Free Wi-Fi is
accessible in all public areas. Approximately 30,000 square feet of meeting
space is available in 26 separate rooms including a 10,000-square-foot
ballroom. Free newspapers and fruit-infused water are available in the lobby.
Valet dry cleaning and laundry services are offered in this non-smoking
hotel. Pets are welcome with certain restrictions. Free shuttle service is provided within a three-mile radius, which includes downtown Pittsburgh. Self-parking is the only option, but it has in-and-out privileges.
