Scene

Even the name of this place conjures up a laid-back, fun loving vibe -- and that's exactly what guests get.

It's not fancy, but Kon Tiki Inn is special, as evidenced by the fact that this place it's frequently sold out despite the fact that it closely resembles a motel. And though it has the same -- and some might argue better -- views as much more expensive area hotels, with that low price tag comes a relaxed vibe and clientele who seem to feel they're getting plenty of bang for their buck. There's a small business center, but this place is much better suited for the leisure traveler.

Location

Direct beach access and a central location

Between Los Angeles and San Francisco in the town of Pismo Beach sits what many have called a 'hidden gem" of the California coast. Right off Highway 101 and situated among shops and restaurants, the Kon Tiki Inn has direct access to one major attraction: the stretch of beach directly behind the hotel. It's not a place people go to party, however -- the tiny town gets very quiet come nightfall.

Rooms

The dated rooms won't be featured in a design magazine anytime soon, but all the basics are covered and then some.

Every room at Kon Tiki Inn has an ocean view and a sliding glass door, bringing fresh air and ocean breezes into rooms day and night. And while the decor may be a bit outdated -- think seashell bedspreads and heavy powder-blue drapes -- there are a few modern amenities such as 40-inch flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Rooms also come equipped with hairdryers, ironing boards, and mini-fridges. Some rooms have fireplaces.

Features

Direct beach access and some great freebies

Guests can access the ocean and beach directly from the hotel's steep staircase, or take in the views from the heated pool and two jacuzzis. Freebies include a continental breakfast, Wi-Fi throughout the resort, and access to the fitness center next door, including use of the classes, pool, sauna and steam room. There's an on-site restaurant, called Choose Steamers, which serves lunch and dinner alongside more gorgeous ocean views.
