Hotel Repubblica Marinara is a beautifully maintained three-pearl option with some of the most nicely decorated rooms in Pisa. Unfortunately, the out-of-the-way location is about a 15-minute drive from the Leaning Tower of Pisa, making it less than ideal for tourists who want to explore on foot. The 54 rooms are spread over two floors and each unit is painstakingly decorated to include bold paint, original art, and creature comforts like flat-screen TVs and kettles. Downstairs, the Italian restaurant is open for all three meals and features an express lunch option that's popular with business travelers. Remaining features include free Wi-Fi, free garage parking, and a full bar with a huge wine collection. For a hotel that's at the doorstep to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, check rates at Hotel Pisa Tower -- but expect higher prices.
Scene
Two-story brick hotel popular with Italian travelers and business events
Hotel Repubblica Marinara is a good choice for those who want a taste of local Pisa, farther away from the tourist hordes. The restaurant is often filled with locals, especially at lunch, when Italians working in nearby offices fill the dining room. In fact, the restaurant is the most interesting public space in the hotel. The entrance is punctuated with a wooden boat and there's a huge display of Italian products and wines. The small reception area is lit with purple neon lights and furnished with a black leather sofa. A cute painting of child-like flowers decorates the wall behind the front desk. Other than the restaurant and lobby, there aren't other additional public spaces. The hotel is quiet at night, after the dinner rush in the restaurant. There's an elevator or stairs that lead to the second floor and basement.
Location
A 10-minute walk from Congress Palace
Hotel Repubblica Marinara is located on a busy street lined with small shops, restaurants, and pharmacies. It's more conducive to locals than tourists, but it's a pleasant area. The nearest major tourist attraction is the Congress Palace, about a 10-minute walk away. Unfortunately, it takes about 40 minutes to walk or 15 minutes to drive to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Pisa International Airport is a 10-minute drive and Pisa Central Station is a nine-minute drive. It's about a 30-minute drive to Lucca and an hour and 15 minutes by car to Florence.
Rooms
Artistically inspired rooms with bold paint jobs and creature comforts
The carefully designed rooms are the highlight of the hotel and the reason most guests opt to stay here. Each is individually decorated with bold paint, original art, and chic furniture. For instance, one of the Standard Rooms features parquet flooring, floral orbs hanging behind the bed, and a soft brown paint job. Many of the rooms feature jigsaw puzzle-shaped tables and Keith Haring-inspired artwork. All rooms come with a flat-screen TV, air-conditioning, kettle, safe, free Wi-Fi, and mini-fridge stocked with free bottled water. Nice bathrooms feature tiled showers, premium toiletries, and wall-mounted hairdryers. Views are pretty bland -- most overlook the parking lot or street.
Features
Breakfast buffet (not included), all-day Italian restaurant, and free Wi-Fi
Features are simple and the standout is the hotel's all-day Italian restaurant and bar. Breakfast buffet is included in some rates and the substantial spread includes seasonal fruit, eggs, and cured meats. The restaurant offers an express lunch menu that's quite popular with locals, and the dining room is also open for dinner. Menu choices include risotto, pasta, and gelato. It has a full bar with a vast selection of wines and liquors. There are dedicated event spaces with audiovisual capabilities and conference tables in the basement level of the hotel, along with free garage and lot parking. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. The reception desk is staffed 24 hours.
