Bottom Line

Grand Hotel Bonanno is a perfectly pleasant three-pearl option in a quiet neighborhood that's about a 10-minute walk to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The 89 rooms are simply decorated and come with a flat-screen TV, mini-fridge, and electric blinds. Unfortunately, thin walls do little to keep out bathroom noise from the neighbors. The free breakfast buffet is one of the best in Pisa, the spread includes hot and cold Italian and American items. At night, the space is transformed into an elegant Italian restaurant. The adjacent bar is staffed with a bartender, an unexpected perk. Free Wi-Fi, free parking, and bike rentals round out the features. For something a bit more upscale and with a seasonal pool, check rates at the Allegroitalia Pisa Tower.

Scene

Simple hotel geared towards tourists and business travelers

There isn't much of a scene at Grand Hotel Bonnano, as most guests leave the hotel for the day after breakfast -- either to explore Pisa or attend business meetings in the hotel. The lobby's dated and sagging sofas could use a refresh, but the hotel has nice architecture and design that includes marble accents and locally inspired artwork. At night, guests do gather around the staffed bar and have dinner at the Italian restaurant. The furnished outdoor patio (overlooks the parking lot) is another popular place for guests to congregate. Stairs and an elevator are on hand to bring guests up to their rooms.

Location

In a mostly residential neighborhood, near the train tracks

Grand Hotel Bonanno is located in a mostly residential neighborhood that's a mix of apartment buildings and private homes -- plus the Pisa School of Engineering. The train tracks that run behind the hotel are relatively quiet and there's a bit of traffic on the road that leads toward the Leaning Tower of Pisa (a 10-minute walk or five-minute drive). Pisa Central Station is a nine-minute drive and the Pisa International Airport is a seven-minute drive. Farther afield, it's a 30-minute drive to Lucca and about an hour-and-a-half to Florence.

Rooms

Simple decor and thin walls -- some with small balconies

Rooms are straightforward and nicely outfitted with flat-screen TVs (a few English channels), free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, mini-fridges with free bottled water, kettles with tea, and electronic blinds. Decor generally consists of a neutral color palette and dark wood or white furniture. Luggage stands and closets with drawers provide ample storage. Bathrooms either have a shower or shower/tub combo. Toiletries, bidets, and wall-mounted hose-style hairdryers are standard. Some rooms have small balconies and views either overlook the parking lot or the street. The biggest problem with the rooms is thin walls that do little to keep out noise from the neighbors.

Features

Free substantial breakfast spread, Italian restaurant for dinner, and bikes for rent

Features are geared towards both business and leisure travelers. All room rates include a hot and cold breakfast buffet with American and European items like bacon, scrambled eggs, cereal, fresh fruit, pastries, yogurt, and espresso coffees. At night, the same dining room turns into an Italian restaurant with favorites like shrimp risotto and beef filet. The nearby bar has a staffed bartender and full selection of liquors and wines. For business travelers, there are dedicated event spaces at the end of the lobby. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. The front desk is staffed 24 hours and can assist with bike rentals and directions. Free parking is available in a lot behind the hotel that's shared with a residential apartment building.
