Bottom Line

The Pier 42 Boutique Resort & Spa is a mid-range property that attracts divers because of its location just a few minute's walk from Chalong Pier. The hotel has homey lounge spaces and a charming cafe and bar, plus a spa with four treatment rooms, and a small outdoor pool with a whirlpool, surrounded by tropical plants and wooden loungers. Its 24 guest rooms are comfortable and welcoming with hardwood floors, teak furniture, and modern amenities like minibars, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, though bathrooms tend to be pretty basic. The "Resort & Spa" label might be an oversell, but this is a solid and competitively priced three-pearl property. For more of a resort feel, travelers may prefer the beach-front Serenity Resort & Residences, which offers an infinity-edge pool and other extras, though it tends to be pricier.

Scene

Homey boutique property popular among divers

The Pier 42 Boutique Resort & Spa offers a cozy, homey ambiance with mosaic tiled and hardwood floors, reclaimed teak furniture, and bright accent walls. One of the primary hangout spots is the cafe and bar, which has a charming, local-coffee shop feel with black-and-white checkered floors, chalkboard menus, local crafts, and an eclectic mix of wood furniture. The outdoor pool is small, but creates a calming and peaceful courtyard scene with wood lounge chairs set under the shade of tropical plants. The "Resort & Spa" designation might feel like a bit of a stretch for guests used to big pools, snack bars, and beachfront access; with only 24 rooms, this is certainly a smaller and more modest property. But the prices here are competitive, the atmosphere is pleasant, and the location next to Chalong Pier is ideal for divers -- the property's primary clientele. (There's even a shop selling diving equipment on-site.)

Location

Next to Chalong Pier, a major departure point for diving expeditions

The hotel is situated in a quiet spot off the main road, just a few minutes walk from Chalong Pier. This is a departure point for diving expeditions and tours of nearby islands, and many of the guests who stay at the hotel are divers. There are other resorts and hotels in the immediate area, as well as restaurants and bars, many a five-minute walk or less from the property. Phuket International Airport is about an hour's drive. On-site parking is free, but spaces are limited.

Rooms

Homey rooms with hardwood floors, minibars, and organic toiletries

Rooms are comfortable and clean with a casual homeyness that combines traditional and contemporary style. Most feature hardwood floors, reclaimed teak furniture, small wooden desks, and bean bag chairs. Bathrooms tend to be pretty basic, pairing white tiling with brightly painted walls and wet-room style showers. All rooms are air-conditioned and include 26- to 31-inch flat-screen TVs, laptop safes, and free Wi-Fi. They also have coffee and tea service and lightly stocked minibars, and room service is available. Guests love that the same organic Siam Botanicals products found at the spa are used in the bathrooms -- though they're mostly in dispensers. (Guests are offered a few individual samples to go.) Higher-category rooms may add extras: the 11 Superior Rooms have rainfall showers, and the Villa Suite, which can accommodate up to five guests, features two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a dining area, plus an outdoor terrace and rainfall shower with a teak bath.

Features

Charming cafe and bar, peaceful outdoor pool, and on-site spa and shops

Though it's a bit limited, Pier 42 offers a nice set of features for a boutique property in this pearl-range. The outdoor pool is small, but it includes a whirlpool, and the ambiance is pretty and peaceful, with a terra-cotta tiled patio, wooden lounge chairs, and an abundance of tropical plants. The spa has four treatment rooms and offers a menu that includes massages, facials, and manicures. Guests love the all-natural Siam Botanicals products used at the spa, which are available for purchase. There's a small gym, but it's pretty basic, with a treadmill, elliptical, and a few yoga mats.  The hotel has a charming cafe and bar, which has the ambiance of a local coffee shop and offers daily breakfast buffet and made-to-order options, plus Thai dishes for lunch and dinner. Room service is available during limited hours. The hotel also has its own Ocean Store, which sells a nice range of gear for diving and other water activities, and local crafts and artisanal items are also available for purchase on-site.There's a 24-hour front desk, a computer for guest use, and free Wi-Fi throughout the property. Staff can offer recommendations, especially about the local diving scene and water-related tourist activities.
