Bottom Line

Pacific Club Resort is not so much a resort
as a relatively small, boutique-sized hotel set on a quiet hillside overlooking
Phuket's Karon Beach. The location is ideal for those wanting somewhere away
from the bustle of the popular tourist town below while still being within
walking distance of its beach (though getting back uphill might be a struggle
for some). The panorama from the rooftop pool is superb, and most rooms have sea views from balconies. Overall, the property is a solid upper-mid-range choice that’s
a slight cut above most hotels in the area while offering competitive rates.

Scene

Mixture of architectural styles with flowing interiors and abundant vegetation

Pacific Club Resort was opened in 2005 by an
American ex-pat, Eric, having the aim of blending Southwestern U.S.,
Mediterranean, and Thai styles of architecture with flowing
organic forms and natural elements. This is evident in the entrance's curving,
pebble walls backed by lush tropical vegetation that lead guests under a
traditional Thai portico and into the hotel lobby -- a spacious, low-ceiling space with terracotta floor tiles, wicker furnishings, and an abundance of
potted plants and shrubbery. Pebble-lined walkways weave though the property to
a stairwell that winds up to an impressive rooftop terrace, where views can be enjoyed with a cooling sea breeze. The hotel’s
intimate, secluded ambiance attracts vacationing couples keen to experience a peaceful stay away from beachfront bustle.

Location

Hillside setting overlooking Phuket's Karon Beach resort with jungle mountain backdrop

The hotel is located on a relatively quiet
road on the hillside overlooking the north end of Phuket's popular Karon resort
area, with a backdrop of picturesque jungle mountains. Karon's white sandy beach
is about 10 minutes south by foot, while the busy and bustling town center with
numerous bars, restaurants, and shops is about a 15-minute walk. The area's
capital, Phuket City, is 30 minutes northeast by car. Phuket
International Airport is 50 minutes north while flights to Bangkok's
Suvarnabhumi Airport take an hour and 15 minutes, in addition to boarding time.

Rooms

Homey guest units open to furnished balconies, most with sea views

The hotel has 33 air-conditioned guest
units, all decorated in a homey style with traditional Thai
styling, terracotta tiled floors, teak furnishings, and potted plants. Size and
layout varies, though all rooms have free Wi-Fi, 32-inch flat-screen TVs, and
full-sized fridge/freezers and microwaves. (The latter two amenities are unusual
but certainly useful.) All rooms also extend to furnished balconies -- most of
which have superb sea views -- while One- and Two-Bedroom Suitesalso have
small kitchens. Bathrooms are mostly tiled in white/off-white and green and offer marble-top basins, while a 2014
renovation has upgraded almost half of the hotel's bathrooms to Modern Roman styling.

Features

Rooftop terrace with narrow pool, hot tub, and superb panoramic vistas

The hotel's highlight is its charming
rooftop terrace, featuring a long, narrow swimming pool complete with waterfall,
in-pool seating, hot tub, and spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding natural scenery and ocean.  Also on hand are a steam sauna which uses Chinese herbs and
aromatics and a spa offering a range of massage treatments. A combined fitness
and game room include table tennis and various exercise machines, though the
space lacks natural light. An on-site mini-mart provides simple
groceries and vacation-wear. A buffet breakfast is included in the cost of the
room, while the hotel's restaurant serves a wide range of dishes, from Thai to
Tex-Mex. Free Wi-Fi is also available throughout the property, which is unusual for the area.
