Andakira Hotel

A bigger hotel than most in Patong, this property looks and feels more like condominiums than a hotel. The lobby of this 200-room structure is semi-open, to take advantage of the Thai climate and fresh air. High ceilings with large columns, traditional wood accents, and varied wicker seating arrangements greet guests checking in. As an urban hotel, there isn't much in the way of grounds or tropical landscaping. 

While the staff is friendly, many don't speak clear English, which can be a problem for tourists who need assistance and don't understand Thai. Large tour groups seem to be frequent patrons of this hotel, along with friends on holiday and people looking to party at Bangla Night Market.

It's a five-minute walk to Bangla Road from the Andakira Hotel, meaning it's close enough to walk back to after partying but also far enough away that guests aren't disturbed by noise at night, though there is construction in the area that can be a problem. The ocean is a little farther (about a 10-minute walk); there is a free daily shuttle to the beach but with traffic it's often quicker to hoof it. Across the street from the property is a cute bar, as as well as a lovely day spa, and there are many restaurants nearby as well. 

The rooms at the Andakira Hotel are big, which is a plus (especially if traveling with multiple people). There are many room configurations as well -- ranging from Deluxe to Family -- and all are spacious. Simply decorated with white walls, wood paneling and furniture, and a few bright throw pillows, paintings, and lamps, the decor is pleasing enough to the eye and fits the aesthetic of the area and the contemporary vibe of the hotel.

The beds, which can range from twin-size to king, are hard -- seemingly the norm in Patong -- and the linens are not top quality (a tad scratchy, they could do with an upgrade). Noise doesn't seem to be an issue here. Modern amenities include minibars, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi (though it's inconsistent), and electric kettles with coffee/tea fixings. While the bathrooms are oversized, there seem to be some issues with cleanliness and some of the rooms have mildew or mold. There are robes and toiletries available for guests' use, however. 

Unfortunately, past guests have reported safety issues at this hotel, even with in-room safes; leaving valuables unattended (or even nice clothes) doesn't seem to be a good idea. Higher floors have better views; lower floors look directly into surrounding buildings. 

The hotel's appropriately named Pool Bar has a double meaning since it's the place to get drinks poolside, and guests can play pool at the billiards table. The actual swimming pool itself is small and doesn't get a lot of sun since there are buildings all around blocking the rays. However, unless you've booked one of the rooms with direct access to the pool, it can actually feel odd to swim, because the private inlets make swimmers feel as if they're invading someone else's personal space. 

Though there is a free breakfast, it seems to be on a three-day rotating cycle (so you will get the same items over and over) and it's not of the highest quality. The on-site restaurant/bar is convenient and reasonably priced, however, and serves both Thai and Western entrees. The beach shuttle comes five-times per day, but can be a tad unpredictable so many guests choose to walk to the water instead. An on-site business and conference center don't seem to get much use. Spotty Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
