Bottom Line

In the shadow of the desert and South Mountain Park sits the four-pearl Legacy Golf Resort, best known for its golf course and golf-improvement facilities. The 328 suites in this time-share property offer apartment-style lodgings and include kitchens or kitchenettes and balconies -- Condos also have whirlpool tubs. A pool, a hot tub, and outdoor facilities such as a volleyball court attracts families, while a spa and resort activities draws couples, the most common guests. There's also an on-site restaurant and three meeting spaces, but the facilities are a little dated. Travelers may also want to consider the Arizona Grand Resort, which has a waterpark and more dining options.

Legacy Golf Resort

Scene

Spanish mission-style time-share hotel that caters to couples and families

Housed in 12 separate Spanish mission-style buildings known as “casitas,” this mission-style property has a long, rich history filled with stories of President Teddy Roosevelt and Pancho Villa visiting the bunkhouse on the first tee of the golf course. The grounds are green and feature many trees and planted flowers, especially near the large water fountain in front of the lobby building. The lobby is smallish, with a Southwestern vibe characterized by pale-pink walls, iron chandeliers and light fixtures, and blue-and-white Spanish cross tiles that decorate the wooden front desk. There are brown leather couches and chairs clustered together to provide seating. It’s a warm atmosphere but one that’s somewhat basic for a resort of this size. There’s a lodge-like atmosphere to the restaurant, which has worn wooden tables and chairs with leather cushions, plus exposed wooden beams and worn brown carpet. Most guests are couples on a romantic getaway, though with its family-friendly amenities, many people with kids stay here too.

Rooms

Southwestern apartment-style rooms with kitchens or kitchenettes and washer/dryers

Rooms at the Legacy Golf Resort have a Southwestern-style made up of earth tones, Native American art, turquoise carpet, Spanish arches, and wooden furniture that gives off a warm, inviting atmosphere. Though the decor reflects the culture of the area, many items of the rooms are starting to look a bit dated. The resort has three room options: Studio Suites and One or Two-Bedroom Condos. The Condos are much larger and have full-size kitchens rather than the kitchenettes found in the Studio Suites. Note that each Two-Bedroom Condos is actually just a One-Bedroom Condo and a Studio Suite combined. All room types have flat-screen TVs, DVD players, pullout sofas, and washer/dryers. The kitchens and kitchenettes have stoves, ovens, refrigerators, microwaves, and coffeemakers. Each unit has a balcony with two lounge chairs and a small table. The bathrooms are a bit more luxurious, with red earth-colored marble floors and sinks, while the Southwestern-style wallpaper maintains the personality of the rooms. Studio Suites have shower/tub combos, while the Condos have separate whirlpool tubs and walk-in showers. Hairdryers and the Eartherapy brand of hotel toiletries are provided. The biggest drawback of the rooms is that there isn’t daily housekeeping, though the service is available for a fee.

A modern spa offers the usual range of massages and body treatments, and there’s a medium-sized fitness center with a variety of cardio machines, weight-lifting machines, and free weights.
