Bottom Line

The mid-range DoubleTree by Hilton Phoenix North offers excellent rates and modern facilities including a large pool and lots of meeting space. Its 284 rooms are pleasant, with Keurig coffeemakers and mini-fridges. However, bathrooms are small and drab, and only upgraded rooms have safes and microwaves. Numerous restaurants and the Metro Center Mall are within a brief walk, but some past guests report feeling uncomfortable walking in the neighborhood at night. The hotel’s free shuttle service helps ease concerns, however. Another good North Phoenix option is the upper-middle-range Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort, which offers spacious suites, waterpark, and spectacular mountainside setting at only slightly higher rates.

Scene

Contemporary chain hotel popular with business and leisure travelers

The DoubleTree by Hilton attracts business travelers and tourists alike thanks to its large inventory of meeting spaces, reasonable rates, and proximity to local shopping. The spacious, multi-level lobby is bright and modern, with orange and gold upholstered furniture and beige carpeting with blue-and-gold sunburst patterns. A library-like area has clusters of blue and gold furniture facing a flat-screen TV mounted adjacent to bookcases lined with colorful vases. The long registration desk sits next to a convenience store selling basic sundries. The on-site Brixton Pub can be a lively place at times, with lots of wood tables on salmon-colored tile and a rectangular wood bar with a granite top. This hotel can feel busy when meetings are taking place, but it has enough space to avoid feeling crowded.

Location

Near the Metrocenter Mall, about a 15- to 20-minute drive north of downtown Phoenix

DoubleTree by Hilton Phoenix North is located about a 15- to 20-minute drive north of downtown Phoenix, surrounded by numerous restaurants and shops, all within a two- to three-minute walk. It’s adjacent to the Metrocenter Mall (a six-minute walk) and its 100-plus retailers and cinema complex. While many attractions are walkable, including the Castles N Coasters amusement park (an 11-minute walk), some past hotel guests have reported feeling uneasy about walking through the area at night. But, the hotel operates a free shuttle within a three-mile radius that encompasses the mall and amusement park. Access to Interstate 17 is about five minutes away by car. Attractions in and around downtown Phoenix also take around 15 to 20 minutes to reach by car, including the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, the Heard Museum, Chase Field, Talking Stick Resort Arena, and the Phoenix Convention Center. Old Town Scottsdale’s numerous shops and restaurants are about half an hour away by car, and the must-see Desert Botanical Garden and Arizona State University’s campus in Tempe are 25 minutes away. A bus stop is about a two-minute walk from the hotel, but it typically takes significantly longer to travel anywhere in the Valley by public transit.

Rooms

Pleasant rooms with chain-hotel decor, Keurig coffeemakers, and mini-fridges, but small, drab bathrooms

The 284 guest rooms are decorated in a fashion that’s typical of DoubleTree by Hilton hotels, with dark, wavy patterned carpets and matching grayish-brown bed skirts offset by white bedding. Gold drapes and rectangular-patterned wallpaper give a tasteful backdrop. Bright-orange bolster pillows and matching leather desk chairs add a bit of style, but nothing that steps away from the chain-hotel aesthetic. Furniture is dark wood and includes desks, dressers, nightstands, and headboards. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, iHome alarms, and mini-fridges.

Standard Rooms come with king or two queen bed options, while Business Class Rooms and Suites feature enhanced amenities including microwaves, robes, slippers, and electronic safes. Suites typically feature sleeper sofas and wet bars as well. Some rooms also offer small patios with pool views. Bathrooms are small and drab, with beige tile floors and tan acrylic walk-in showers. Rooms are generally quiet, but those facing the busy road might hear a bit more noise.
