Two-pearl Loreto Boutique Hotel is a small family-run place that's packed with history and has a great central location right on the Plaza de Armas. The hotel provides a buffet breakfast, and other useful trekker services like luggage storage, transfers, and free oxygen and coca tea to help with altitude sickness. The 12 rooms are a good size, come in multiple configurations, and are bright, even though many lack exterior windows. Being so central has its downsides, of course. Frequent celebrations in the square and general street noise can be disturbing at night. If this is an issue, guests might prefer to look at La Posada del Viajero Hostal, which is set just a couple of blocks from the square and has a lovely interior courtyard garden.

Loreto Boutique Hotel is housed in an ancient building, next a beautifully ornate church, and history figures largely at this property. In fact, the building was once an ajila wasi -- or, a home for chosen virgins. Many of the original heavy-duty stone walls remain, and as with many hotels in this historic town, it's tucked away behind them. There's a traditional style throughout the interiors, amplified by the exposed stone walls and Andean fabrics in cushions, wall-hangings, and throws. Loreto is a small family-run hotel with just a handful of rooms, and it has an intimate vibe. Guests kick back in the cozy lobby and in the bright second-floor lounge. A range of travelers pass through due to the central location and the low rates.

Just off Cusco's main plaza, a five-minute walk from Qurinkancha
Loreto Boutique Hotel is set just off Cusco's main plaza, with a Starbucks attached, plus numerous restaurants and shops all around. It's a great location for tourists wanting to be right in the center of the action, but can be a bit noisy. The impressive Cusco Cathedral is just a few minutes away on foot, and Qurinkancha is a five-minute walk from the hotel. The artisanal market is about a 15-minute walk, and the main Wanchaq rail station is next door to the market. Getting to the airport takes about 20 minutes by car, and the hotel provides transfers. It's a 30-minute drive to Poroy, which is the jumping-off point for Machu Picchu.

Rooms are neat and bright, with white walls that are hung with local artwork. Traditional furniture includes heavy wooden beds and other rustic touches, but rooms lack storage space -- most just have a rail of hangers. Some rooms have a more historic look, with original Inca stone walls, and there are larger Quad Rooms that are great for families or small groups. As with many such hotels locally, lots of rooms only open to the internal courtyard and lack exterior windows. Even so, the location right off of Plaza de Armas means that there's a fair bit of street noise, especially during celebrations in the square -- which are pretty regular. Standard features include flat-screen TVs, safes, and heating, plus free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are long and narrow. Some of the Double Rooms have rainfall showers, while the Twin Rooms tend to have shower/tub combos. All include basic toiletries, towels, hot water, and hairdryers.
