Bottom Line

The Villa Royale
Montsouris is a mid-range hotel that looks like it belongs in Morocco but is actually in the 14th Arrondissement of Paris. Designed with an Andalusian and Moorish theme, the 36 guest rooms have minibars, flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, terra cotta floors, and tile bathrooms. However, room lighting is poor and some of the furniture is worn. The Porte d'Orleans Metro station is a 10-minute walk from the hotel, and that's a good thing, because there are few major sights within an easy walk and the are isn't Paris' most charming. Free Wi-Fi
and room service are nice perks, but the breakfast buffet costs extra and there's no on-site parking. The nearby Le Fabe Hotel has parking and a sauna for about the same rate.

Scene

Moroccan style with wrought iron and copper features throughout

An Moroccan style
predominates the hotel lobby, which is adorned with copper and wrought iron features. Tan-tile
floors are brightened up with colorful area rugs, while tan couches with red pillows provide
seating and there are free newspapers on a woven table. Built-in alcoves hold vases and pottery. Terra cotta floors and modern chairs with
long curved backrests sit throughout the comfortable breakfast room. Lighting is dim, but it almost looks romantic, with red-and-white tablecloths and white metal light fixtures. Hallways have multicolored carpet and are lit with lovely Moroccan-style metal light fixtures. Kids are welcome here, but the majority of visitors are couples on vacation.

Location

14th Arrondissement -- walk to metro in 10 minutes

Situated in an unremarkable corner of the 14th Arrondissement, The Villa Royale Montsouris
is a five-minute walk to Parc Montsouris. There's not much in the immediate area beyond the park, but the Paris Catacombs and the Place Denfert-Rocherau are about a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Ambitious guests can reach Montparnasse, which is home to restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and museums in a 25-minute walk. Tour Montparnasse, the Pantheon, and the Luxembourg Gardens are a
10-minute drive from the hotel while the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, the
Louvre, and the Notre Dame Cathedral are a 15-minute drive. The closest metro station is at Porte d'Orleans, and it takes 40 minutes to reach the Eiffel Tower, 30 minutes to reach Notre Dame, and 30 minutes to reach the Louvre. The Charles De
Gaulle Airport is a 30-minute drive away, while Orly Airport can be reached in 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or car. There isn't any parking available at the hotel.

Rooms

Modern rooms with Moroccan style, terra cotta floors, and air-conditioning

The Moroccan theme
continues in the guest rooms, with terra cotta tile floors and wrought iron
bed frames decorated with different colored scarves. Beds are made up with orange bedspreads and colorful pillows, while blue and red drapes hang
over the windows. Blue velvet desk chairs sit next to stained glass lamps,
and there are safes and air-conditioning provided. Flat-screen TVs sit on blue
wood furniture while minibars reside underneath. Rooms are dim and some of the furniture looks a bit worn. Green and orange tile bathrooms match the style of the bedrooms. Most are done with terra cotta floors, green countertops, and wrought iron detailing around
the mirrors. Heated towel racks and tile shower/tub combos are featured, and toiletries are provided. There are no shower curtains on the shower/tub combos,
though, and guests have complained that the tubs are high and difficult to exit.

Features

A breakfast buffet and free Wi-Fi

Features at this hotel are limited. A breakfast buffet is served each morning for a charge. It usually includes pastries, ham, cheese, yogurt, cereal, and fresh fruit. Room service is available within limited hours, though there isn't a full restaurant or bar here. The front desk is open 24 hours a day and staff can provide concierge services, and arrange dry cleaning and car services. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, though the first floor and lobby have the most reliable connection.
