Bottom Line

Situated on the banks of the Ourcq Canal in a neighborhood currently undergoing rejuvenation, the St Christopher's Inn is a pleasant and inexpensive alternative to Paris' other youth hostels. It offers a wide range of room categories , from a 10-person dormitory through to individual bedrooms with private bathrooms. This hostel has a welcoming atmosphere for young backpackers but is unlikely to satisfy those who expect more than the most basic comforts.

Scene

A social hostel filled with young backpackers

This hostel is in a modern building and has a youthful and relaxed atmosphere. There is a bar with a wide range of international beers, a basement nightclub and an Internet cafe with free Internet access. Everything seems designed towards encouraging communication and socialization between young backpacking travelers who make up the main part of the hostel's guests. Room decoration is minimal to the point of austerity, but this hotel is a practical alternative for those with low budgets hoping to visit Paris.

Location

At least a 20-minute subway ride away from popular sights

The hostel is located on the Ourcq Canal, close to a metro station and only two stations from gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est. It is also quite near some rougher neighborhoods, however. This hostel is situated half-way between the Stalingrad and La Villette quarters ,meaning guests will need to use the metro to visit the main tourist attractions in Paris. It could be a good choice for science enthusiasts though, as the Cité des Sciences is just a few hundred meters from the hotel and easy to walk to. For the other famous monuments and tourist attractions you'll need to allow about 20 to 50 minutes by subway. It's good to be aware that some neighboring quarters have unsavory reputations from late evening onwards into the night.

Rooms

No-frills and functional

This hostel tries to cater to several types of guests, including backpackers, traveling professionals, and high school children traveling with their schools. This is reflected in a wide range of room categories, from dormitories to small group rooms to individual bedrooms with private bathrooms. The dormitories are very basic; bedding areas are separated by thin curtains, so that the quality of your night is partly dependent on your neighbors' nocturnal  habits. The individual bedrooms are clean and functional though furnished simply. Some of the individual rooms have balconies with breathtaking views of the canal and La Villette area.

Features

A bar and table games

The main attraction of this hostel is the young, convivial atmosphere, which is particularly present in the bar. There are international beers on tap, regular concerts, foosball and billiards. There is a sense that everything has been thought out to facilitate conversation and sharing for young, international guests.
