Hotel Residence Henri IV is a mid-range boutique hotel in Paris' Latin Quarter, about six blocks east of the Sorbonne. It has just eight guest rooms, five two-room apartments, and very few amenities, but all rooms come with kitchenettes. Its location -- on a quiet, dead-end street across from a lovely square -- is also a major draw; Henri IV is just a three-minute walk from the shops, restaurants, and cafes that populate this university area, and less than a 10-minute walk from Notre Dame. There is no fitness center and no full restaurant, so guests may want to compare the Residence Henri IV to Hotel Le Six, which has more modern decor and additional perks, such as a trendy lounge and spa.
Scene
Classic decor with a Henri IV theme
Inspired by the reign of King Henry IV, the hotel's public areas and guest rooms are filled with old paintings of the beloved king, as well as vintage wooden sculptures and other objects that evoke that period of French history. Balconies with wrought-iron railings adorn the facade of this 19th-century building. With several apartment-style options, this boutique hotel largely attracts families or couples on extended stays. It offers a convenient location for tourists, but some find its lack of many amenities to be a disappointment.
Location
On a quiet street in the Latin Quarter, near the Sorbonne
The hotel is located on a quiet, dead-end street in the Fifth Arrondisement across from Paul Langevin Square, a small, peaceful park bordered by magnolia trees. Numerous restaurants, shops, and cafes are within a three-minute walk, the Notre Dame is less than a 10-minute walk, and the Pantheon is about a five-minute walk from the hotel. The hotel is closest (about a five-minute walk) to metro station Maubert Mutualite, where its Line 10 crosses the city east to west, making it easy to navigate Paris. The airport is almost 40 minutes away by car.
Rooms
Classically decorated rooms and apartments with kitchenettes
Rooms are decorated in a classic style, and some include poster beds. Heavy curtains, patterned wallpaper, armoires, desks, and more portraits and details that evoke the reign of King Henry IV (his likeness even adorns the lampshades) prevail. From Double Standard Rooms to two-room apartments that can sleep up to four, all rooms have minibars, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, individually controlled air-conditioning, and kitchenettes with microwaves, stovetops, refrigerators, and dinnerware. Some of the rooms have terraces. Bathrooms, which come with Algotherm toiletries, are modern and marble, and some overlook a quaint courtyard.
Features
Afternoon tea and a lovely breakfast (for a fee)
There aren’t many extra features at the Hotel Residence Henri IV, but the kitchenettes -- in the rooms and apartments -- set it apart. Aside from a generous breakfast, which is not included in the daily rate, there is also afternoon tea. A multi Shiatsu-massage device is available upon request, and a laptop computer is available in the lobby for guests' use; free Wi-Fi is also available throughout the hotel. The hotel has a luggage storage room and an elevator, and small pets are allowed. An airport/station shuttle is available for a fee.
