The Hotel
Magellan is a mid-range hotel set in a renovated 19th-century building in
Paris's 17th arrondissement. The surrounding area is mostly residential, with plenty of shops and cafes; the city center is a
15-minute metro ride away, and the business areas around the Palais des Congrès and Porte de Champerret are within walking distance, as is the Arc de Triomphe. Most of the clean, basic rooms overlook the pleasant, peaceful
garden, with its patio sitting area. Breakfast on the terrace and
24-hour room service are two main highlights -- and unusual for this level of hotel.
Although the location is not ideal for exploring central Paris, rates are reasonable for the
area and quality; nearby Champerret Elysees might be a cheaper option.
Scene
Typically Parisian 19th-century facade with modern interiors and private garden
The Hotel
Magellan is housed in a charming 19th-century building fronted with typically
Parisian carved details and wrought-iron window decoration. Inside,
the lobby doesn't quite deliver on the promise of the facade: with its modern wood paneling, white tiled floors, and dark upholstered furniture, the
ambience borders on airport lounge, complete with a vending machine. The small bar area is an extension of the lobby, and the breakfast room feels a bit like a university dining hall. The hotel is spread between two properties: the main building and the "Pavilion," the latter of which which lacks an elevator. The
buildings are separated by a large garden terrace full of greenery
and with plenty of outdoor seating -- quite a bonus in a city known for its small lodgings and limited amenities. The hotel is especially popular with business travelers, considering its location.
Location
Set in the well-heeled 17th arrondissement in northwest Paris, near business exhibition centers
The Hotel Magellan is
located on a relatively quiet street in the outer reaches of the 17th arrondissement, in a well-heeled neighborhood with plenty of shops and cafes in the northwest of Paris. It is an
eight-minute walk to the nearest metro station, Pereire, from which you can be in the center of Paris in about 15 minutes. The Arc de Triomphe -- at the top of the renowned shopping avenue, the Champs-Élysées -- is about 15 minutes away on foot.
Paris's major exhibition hall, the Palais des Congrès, is within walking distance of the hotel, as is the Porte de Champerret exhibition center, and the nearby Boulevard Périphérique means easy
access by car. Parking is available for a fee through the hotel, and the concierge can arrange for airport transfers.
Rooms
Most rooms overlook quiet internal garden
The Hotel Magellan
has 72 rooms -- average-sized for Paris -- all of which are decorated in a simple but smart modern style with wood furnishings, brown carpeting, and large windows. Bathrooms are a little dated, with their grey wall tiling and dated fixtures, but are functional and include wall-mounted hairdryers, bidets, and walk-in showers or shower/tub combinations. Tea and coffee facilities, free
Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels are all included, although
Wi-Fi can be slow without the paid upgrade. Beds are topped with eco-friendly duvets and pillows, while
toiletries are also eco-friendly. Most rooms face the hotel's quiet
internal garden, but street-facing rooms can get street noise and many guests complain of thin walls.
Features
Breakfast on the terrace and room service around the clock
The hotel has a
breakfast room overlooking the garden; the buffet (for a fee) includes a range of hot and cold items, which can also be taken in-room or in the garden during the
summer months. There's no restaurant, although room service is available around
the clock, and can also be enjoyed out on the terrace. There's also a small bar area in the lobby. An internet corner
with an iMac is available for guests' use and Wi-Fi is free of charge, although it can be slow without paid upgrade.
