Bottom Line

Situated on the fringe of the city center, the 38-room Hotel Europe offers no-frills private rooms at budget prices. While it's out in the 17th Arrondissement, the hotel is only a two-minute walk to the metro and near many eateries. Rooms at the hotel are surprisingly clean and pleasant for a property in this price range, with flat-screen TVs, and extras like desks and wardrobes -- though they lack air-conditioning and Wi-Fi. Single rooms feature en-suite toilets and sinks, but showers are shared. (Other rooms get private, en-suite showers.) There are no common areas other than the lobby that doubles as a breakfast room (breakfast costs an extra fee), and there's no elevator. The nearby Art Hotel Congres offers more features, but it can be almost double the price, depending on the season.

Scene

Clean, no-frills budget hotel with private rooms

Situated in a four-story cream-colored building with a flat facade and red awning, the budget-friendly Hotel Europe doesn't look like much from the outside. Inside, the lobby -- the hotel's only common area -- is small but charming with tiled floors, white and gray walls, and red accents, including a red front desk, and a collage-style accent wall. Two cafe tables offer guests a chance to sit and relax, and also double as an eating area during breakfast. The property is low on frills and offers few extra features, but it's surprisingly clean and tasteful for a hotel at this pearl and price level. With inexpensive double and single beds and easy access to the metro, this is a hotspot for budget travelers, including couples and those going solo.

Location

Outside of main tourist area in 17th Arrondissement, a two-minute walk to metro

The Hotel Europe is situated on a quiet street in a residential, working-class section of Paris' 17th Arrondissement. While not in the tourist center of the city, the property is only a two-minute walk from the Brochant metro station which shares the area with a host of eateries and restaurants. From the metro, guests can get to most Paris hotspots in about a half hour to forty minutes. For enthusiastic walkers, Montmartre and Pigalle are reachable in 25 to 30 minutes on foot, with the famous Moulin Rouge an 18-minute walk from the hotel. Charles de Gaulle Airport and Orly Airport are a 30-minute drive from the hotel, but can be an hour or more in traffic.- Two-minute walk to Brochant metro station

  • 18-minute walk to Moulin Rouge
  • 20-minute walk to Pigalle
  • 25-minute walk to Montmartre (25 minutes via public transport)
  • 30-minute walk to Sacré-Cœur (30 minutes via public transport)
  • 25 minutes to the Louvre via public transport
  • 30 minutes to Arc de Triomphe via public transport
  • 30 minutes to Musée d’Orsay via public transport
  • 40 minutes to Eiffel Tower via public transport
  • 40 minutes to Cathédrale Notre-Dame via public transport
  • 30-minute drive to Orly Airport (without traffic)
  • 30-minute drive to Charles de Gaulle Airport (without traffic)

Rooms

Clean, basic rooms with flat-screen TVs, and en-suite bathrooms in most

For a hotel of this pearl-level, the Hotel Europe offers rooms that are surprisingly clean and attractive. While rooms are small and decor is limited, they are pleasant and contemporary. Most feature light wood floors, white walls, gray furniture, and plaid bedspreads, with wall art hanging over the beds. Rooms include beds with headboards, nightstands, small wardrobes, and flat-screen TVs, though they don't get many channels. Some rooms also have desks and chairs. While rooms vary in size and layout, they tend to be small, though comparable in size to other Parisian hotels. Superior Rooms have more space, and some have balconies. Each Single Room includes a tiny half bathroom with a sink and toilet, and guests have access to a a shared, wet-room style shower in the hall. And every Double, Twin, and Triple Standard and Superior Room includes a tiny en-suite bathroom with a toilet, sink, and shower stall. Guests in all rooms are given towels and hand soap. There are no hairdryers. Rooms have windows, but some look out on a courtyard wall. Be aware that cigarette smoke from the courtyard can waft up into some rooms. Rooms do not have air-conditioning, and some guests have complained of minimal heat in the winter. Walls are thin, but the street is quiet, so most noise is from neighboring rooms. The hotel has no elevator and the stairs are narrow, so those with heavy luggage may want to choose a room on a lower floor. Guests say that the free Wi-Fi doesn't reach most guest rooms. Le Loft is the hotel's best room, with a full kitchen, sitting room, and two TVs.

Features

Continental breakfast available for an extra fee and free Wi-Fi in the lobby

The Hotel Europe serves a continental breakfast for an extra fee, which guests find simple but adequate with a choice of breads, pastries, juice, and coffee and tea. There is no separate breakfast room, so the meal is served in the lobby, which only has two tables and can get crowded. The reception desk is open 24 hours, and the lobby offers a few snacks for sale, including soda and water from a small fridge. The hotel also has a tiny outdoor courtyard with wicker furniture and some potted plants. Wi-Fi is free, but it only works in the lobby.
