Bottom Line

The 17-room Hotel du Petit Moulin is an upscale designer sanctuary in the trendy Haut Marais district with antique structural details and eccentric designs by Christian Lacroix. There are 24-hour front desk service and a hip restaurant and bar offering room service. Individually decorated rooms feature stylish and bold decor, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and, in some, pitched ceilings and Paris views. However, there are no in-room tea or coffee facilities and some showers are handheld only. The nearby Pavillon de la Reine is an excellent alternative in the same category, but it tends to be a bit pricier.

Scene

Upscale, trendy boutique with design by Christian Lacroix

It’s the theatrical designs by Christian Lacroix and the trendy location in Haut Marais district that sets the Hotel du Petit Moulin apart from other upscale Paris boutiques. The five-story hotel’s modern and bold interior furnishings complement the antique designs that have been preserved. Formerly a bakery, the building’s original storefront door leads into the lobby that features painted ceilings, an old-fashioned front desk, and billowy, dark curtains that hang over exposed wooden beams in the lobby lounge. Classic velvet chairs, colorful end tables, and leather sofas are in the small lobby lounge. The modern elevator has also been carefully designed with a fun, theatrical wallpaper. Polka dots line the staircase steps that also feature exposed wooden railings, beams, and wall panels. The polka dots continue down narrow hallways with black lacquered room doors. Overall the atmosphere is decadent and upscale.

Location

Nestled in the 3rd Arrondissement of Paris

Travelers will find this hotel in the Haut Marais district on a small street across from the Chez Nenesse, and on a block loaded with shops and restaurants, and within walking distance of galleries, the Musee National Picasso, and the Carnavalet Museum. Within 20 minutes on foot are the Notre Dame Cathedral and Opera Bastille, and it's around 30 minutes to the Louvre. It’s a 40-minute metro ride to the Eiffel Tower and a 30-minute Metro ride to the Avenue des Champs-Elysees. The Palace of Versailles is a 35-minute drive. The Paris Orly Airport takes 30 minutes by car and the Charles de Gaulle Airport takes 40 minutes.

Rooms

Luxe, theatrically designed rooms with flat-screen TVs and Paris street views

Each room is individually designed by Christian Lacroix, and guests can expect bold colors, patterned wallpaper, Venetian mirrors, faux fur throws, and damask prints. They're not the only rooms in the city he produced; he is also responsible for the ones at Hotel Le Notre Dame, which has a terrific location on the Left Bank near the Notre-Dame (it's not as upscale and prices tend to be cheaper). Amenities here include minibars, safes, air-conditioning, bathrobes, slippers, writing desks, flat-screen TVs, and fun, old-fashioned room keys. Modern or eccentrically tiled bathrooms feature hairdryers, high-end toiletries, heated towel racks, shower/tub combos, or separate showers with rainfall showerheads. Some only have handheld showers. Windows offer Paris street views. The one Junior Suite has pitched ceilings with exposed wooden beams, polka dot carpeting, mohair chairs, and a living room with a flat-screen TV.

Features

Trendy bar and breakfast room and concierge services

Hip, contemporary furnishings and antique furniture have been mixed together by Christian Lacroix to create a designer bar and breakfast room. Windows provide a bit of natural light in the dining door that has wooden tables and colorful chairs and booth seating. Exposed ceiling beams and a vintage bar add to the charming atmosphere. The hotel also offers concierge services and can arrange in-room massages or appointments at the nearby Spa de la Reine. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
