Bottom Line

The mid-range Hotel d'Angleterre, once home to the British Embassy, has a history that stretches back to the 1700s. Some decor still projects that level of grandeur, such as the wallpapered breakfast room complete with grand piano, but other elements fall short, such as the worn furniture in reception. The 26 guest rooms have attractive architectural details like wooden beams and carved-stone mantelpieces paired with vintage-style furnishings. In-room amenities include flat-screen TVs but no Wi-Fi (high-speed wired Internet is available). There are few on-site features aside from a buffet breakfast and a small bar. But the hotel's main appeal is its excellent location in Saint Germain des Pres, walking distance to several famous cafes and the Musee d'Orsay. Travelers could also consider the Hotel Verneuil, which is housed in a 17th-century building and has more up-to-date rooms.

Scene

Blending Old-World style with some contemporary elements

While the Hotel d'Angleterre could be a bit more reverent about its historic roots (the property has hosted Ernest Hemingway and Charles Lindberg, among others), there are still enough original elements to make it an impressive building. Like many of the buildings on the block, the hotel has a pale cream facade with flowery, wrought-iron window guards. Inside, the entryway has neo-classical details such as a stained-wood reception desk with scalloped molding, gilt-framed paintings, and green-marble columns. It's easy to imagine how the lobby must have looked when it served as a receiving hall for the British Embassy with its ornate molding, crystal chandelier, and raspberry-red carpet. But the room's contemporary white sofas are a bit worn, and not in a particularly vintage way. The breakfast room is unexpectedly luxurious with flowery wallpaper, a grand piano, gilt-framed mirror, and wooden chairs. A backyard patio offers guests a respite from the city bustle with its wicker lounge chairs and trellis covered with hanging ivy.

Location

A quiet street in the Saint Germain des Pres neighborhood

Saint Germain des Pres, the Left Bank district where Hotel d'Angleterre is located, has been home to numerous artists and intellectuals who made its cafés, museums, and nightclubs world-famous. Ernest Hemingway and Jean-Paul Sartre frequented Les Deux Magots café, which is a three-minute walk from the hotel. And Pablo Picasso was known to toss back a cup at Café de Flore, which is a four-minute walk away. The Musee d'Orsay, with one of the most notable collections of Impressionist works in the world, is a 12-minute stroll from the hotel. The Eiffel Tower is a little farther away: about 11 minutes by car or a little over 30 minutes by metro from the hotel. The Saint Germain des Pres Metro station is a five-minute walk. Businesspeople traveling to the La Defense commercial district will need to schedule a 25-minute drive or 40-minute metro ride. Travelers arriving at Charles de Gaulle Airport should expect the drive to take about 40 minutes. The ride from Orly Airport is about 35 minutes.

Rooms

Vintage-inspired furnishings mixed with historic architectural details

Hotel d'Angleterre has only 26 rooms, but most of them have a distinct mix of vintage-inspired decor and original architectural details. Guest spaces range in size from singles to suites, the largest of which is 60 square meters (about 200 square feet). A Superior Room, for example, has an exposed 16th-century stone wall, four-poster bed, and chairs covered in French country floral fabric. The Saint Germain suite has an arched ceiling with aged wood beams, a Louis XV fireplace, a kitchenette, and, for some reason, an antique switchboard phone as decor. All rooms have down comforters, slippers, flat-screen TVs, and free wired high-speed Internet. The style and size of the bathrooms vary with the level of the room, yet most are spacious with French vintage-inspired fittings and have a shower/tub combination. Some guests complain about the lack of air conditioning in the rooms.

Features

Buffet breakfast, bar, and babysitting

The Hotel d'Angleterre has a limited amount of amenities and limited space for guests to mingle. The breakfast bar is moderately priced (included in rates for direct bookings) and gets positive reviews. And the small bar is fine for an hour of lounging after a day on the town. Parents can arrange to have babysitting for a fee. Free newspapers and a computer station are available in the lobby. Free Wi-Fi is available in the common areas.
