The Hotel Britannique is a charming, mid-range boutique hotel with a classic English decor in the heart of Paris. Its enviable location in the 1st arrondissement is within walking distance of fantastic dining options, along with major attractions like the Louvre and Notre Dame Cathedral. Its 39 rooms, draped in red, have a decidedly romantic vibe. There aren't many features to speak of at this small hotel, but it's a good value given its quaint atmosphere and location. Guests can opt for the breakfast buffet for a fee. Rates tend to be a little cheaper around the corner at the more contemporary Hotel Louvre Rivoli, but it lacks Hotel Britannique's homey appeal.
Scene
Romantic 19th-century boutique with English decor
Hotel Britannique's 19th-century oak doors have been welcoming guests in since 1860. They open into a small lobby with a pair of aged leather chairs and a simple reception desk, with just enough room to maneuver luggage around a brass umbrella stand (that's loaded with umbrellas). A short staircase leads a few steps down into the main common space; a lounge cluttered with lamps between red velvet couches, tufted leather chairs, and Victorian-era memorabilia. Recent wallpaper changes throughout have given the the interiors minor updates, but the classic English decor has remained largely unchanged for years. The warm, welcoming atmosphere -- made more welcoming by the personalized service -- is a big part of the draw.
Location
In the heart of Paris, walking distance to the Louvre and Notre Dame Cathedral
There are precious few addresses as convenient for visiting major attractions as Hotel Britannique. It is along the right bank of the Seine, in the 1st arrondissement, and just a few minutes' walk from the Louvre Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, and the metro. Its central location and easy access to public transportation makes it simple and cheap to move around the city. It's also within walking distance of great dining, shopping, and nightlife in Saint Germain and Le Marais. Other attractions include the nearby Palais-Royal and Tuileries Gardens. Tourists are always bustling through the 1st arrondissement, making it one of the city's most crowded (and most expensive) areas. But despite the crowds, it's extremely pedestrian-friendly. Expect a 35-minute drive to Charles de Gaulle International Airport.
Rooms
English decor, minibars, and flat-screen TVs
The hotel's 39 rooms have a warm English-themed decor with red fabrics and dramatic drapery that makes for a romantic, quaint vibe. Some have accent walls with wallpaper that makes them look as if they're covered in tufted fabric, and the wooden desks have framed illustrations of bygone princesses complete with short biographies. Standard rooms are small, with little space around double or queen-size beds. Upgraded rooms have king-size beds and sitting areas with red velvet armchairs. Junior Suites add living rooms with sofa beds. Free Wi-Fi comes standard as do with flat-screen TVs and minibars. Discerning guests might not be impressed with the refreshment trays, despite their charming ceramic coffee cups, since there's only an electric tea kettle and a cheap brand of instant coffee. The red-and-white tiled bathrooms have tiny walk-in showers. Street-facing rooms get some noise, but offer more interesting views than rooms facing the interior courtyard.
