Le Palmiste Resort & Spa
Costal Road

The family-friendly Le Palmiste Resort & Spa delivers a typical mid-range Mauritian resort experience. The 100 rooms are spread across five sections and vary in style, but all feature flat-screen TVs, free tea and coffee, and terraces or balconies that can be fully shaded by floor-to-ceiling bamboo blinds. Superior Rooms come with iPod docks, bathrobes and slippers, and free Wi-Fi. A buffet restaurant and two bars serve food and drinks all day, and a two-room spa provides mani/pedis and massages. Le Palmiste is across the street from the beach, but its four pools (including one for kids) and outdoor whirlpool help make up for its slightly inland location. Travelers who want to be right on the ocean could look into Mont Choisy Coral Azur Beach Resort, which has similar rates and facilities and a waterfront setting.

Coral Azur Beach Resort
Route Royal, Trou Aux Biches

The 88-room Mont Choisy Coral Azur Beach Resort offers a budget version of the Mauritian beach resort experience with sea-facing pools and hot tubs, animation, and a big buffet restaurant. All rooms are air-conditioned and have a balcony or terrace, and upgraded rooms add free minibar items, free coffee and tea, and beach flip-flops. They also have a brighter, more contemporary look than the Standard Rooms, which feature heavy, dated furnishings. Most of Mont Choisy's guests stay on a half-board basis (room-only and bed-and-breakfast rates are also available; there is no all-inclusive option here), spending their days around the pool terrace and lawn, down by the thin strip of beach, or off on an island excursion. The nearby Le Palmiste has similarly affordable rates and an all-inclusive package, but it lacks Mont Choisy Coral Azur's beachfront location.

Sakoa Boutik Hotel Mauritius
Coastal Road

The family-friendly, upper-middle-range Le Sakoa Hotel is a sweet little beach boutique located in the lively town of Trou aux Biches. Seven thatch-roof bungalows house its 16 tile-floored rooms and suites, which all come with kitchenettes, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and balconies and terraces. The hotel's restaurant, bar, and small pool all face the gorgeous lagoon beach, where water sports like kayaking and snorkeling are available. While Le Sakoa has plenty of appeal, couples might prefer the all-inclusive Recif Attitude, which is a few minutes down the coastal road and has a bigger spa (Le Sakoa's is just an open-by-appointment massage room), a toes-in-the-sand beach restaurant, and an adults-only policy.

Trou Aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa
Royal Road

Rambling along a beautiful stretch of northwestern coast in Mauritius, the luxury Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a vast beach resort offering plenty of space and privacy. The 333 rooms are all suites or pool villas -- each unit has a minibar, flat-screen TV, balcony or terrace, and immense bathroom with a separate tub and rainfall shower (most have outdoor showers as well). Its nearly 90 acres of grounds hold loads of features, from an elaborate spa to six restaurants (several of which are a la carte). The beach itself is postcard-perfect, with reef-protected teal waters and soft white sand. Free water-skiing, sailing, and other motorized and non-motorized water sports are available. Travelers looking for lower rates and a boutique experience should check out the nearby Le Sakoa Hotel.

Le Cardinal Exclusive Resort
Coastal Road

The Le Cardinal Exclusive Resort is among the most upscale boutique hotels in Trou aux Biches, a 10-minute walk to restaurants and shops. All 13 suites and penthouses are spacious and sophisticated with a long list of luxe amenities including refrigerated minibars, lavish bathrooms with soaking tubs, and private ocean-view balconies. The stunning beach, outdoor pool, authentic Mauritian restaurant (with 24-hour room service), and beach and piano bars ensure most guests won't need -- or want -- to leave. For those who do, numerous restaurants, bars, and shops are within walking distance. Although it lacks a beach, Domaine des Alizees Club & Spa by Evaco Holiday Resorts offers similar amenities and sophistication, plus large, condo-style suites for lower rates.

Casuarina Resort & Spa
Coastal Road, 18 Km from Port Louis

Although the mid-range Casuarina Resort & Spa has seen better days, the competitive all-inclusive pricing and essential vacation amenities have kept it afloat for decades. The two swimming pools, one of the area’s best beaches, an intimate spa, and two restaurants (one is an open-air buffet) provide enough to occupy most guests. The 109 rooms are clean, though dated in terms of decor. They come with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and balconies. Spacious Family Cottages upgrade to kitchens and multi-room layouts. The poor Wi-Fi and general sense that the hotel hasn’t been updated in decades are difficult to overlook, however. Note that the beach is located across a busy street from the hotel. Mystik Life Style offers a more modern, boutique experience with similar amenities -- minus the spa -- for less money.

Le Meridien Ile Maurice
Village Hall Lane

Le Meridien Ile Maurice is a 198-room four-pearl beach resort on Mauritius' northwestern coast. It's not as modern or luxurious as some of its resort neighbors, but it has multiple restaurants and bars, sea-facing pools, and a long beautiful beach with calm water and free water sports. Kid-friendly features like a kids' club and baby pool attract families, while a full-service spa and dedicated section for adults only help bring in couples and honeymooners. Rooms are dim and as dated as the common areas; regardless, all are are huge, air-conditioned, and facing the Indian Ocean. Travelers looking for a more luxe experience should check out The Westin Turtle Bay Resort & Spa, Mauritius, which has better rooms and amenities, but also higher rates.

Recif Attitude
Royal Road

Literally steps from the water, the all-inclusive Recif Attitude offers a spectacular beachfront location, boutique style, and a quiet adults-only vibe -- a rather elusive combination for this part of northwest Mauritius. The 70-room upper-middle-range hotel has a chic minimalist style to go along with its intimate atmosphere, as well as two beach restaurants, a small spa, and a sea-facing bar. About half of the rooms face the water, too, and all have minibars, coffee- and tea-making facilities, and balconies or terraces. Downsides here are that rooms can be buggy and mattresses could use replacing. But for the location, style, and price, it's hard to do better than the very romantic, remote-feeling Recif. Those looking for a luxury hotel in Grand Baie with a true boutique atmosphere should try for 20 Degres Sud Hotel, though its beachfront isn't as breathtaking.

Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa
Coastal Road

Set on 25 tropical acres on the island's northwest coast, Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa is a classic and comprehensive Mauritian beach resort. Many of Victoria Beachcomber's features take great advantage of the hotel's beachfront position. There are four restaurants, three bars, and an enormous two-part pool with sea (and sunset) views. Victoria Beachcomber's 254 air-conditioned rooms come with minibars, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. In late 2017, the hotel opened an adults-only section named "Victoria for 2" with an exclusive steakhouse and swim-up rooms with shared pool access. The rest of the hotel continues to be family-friendly, despite these changes. For a small-scale, adults-only boutique, consider the 70-room Recif Attitude, a short drive up the road.
