Bottom Line

The small, upper-middle-range Movie Colony Hotel is renowned for its celeb history: Jim Morrison, Marilyn Monroe, and Frank Sinatra are among the famous who have stayed here. The decor is '60s-inspired but has decidedly modern and minimalist look and overall vibe of the property is casual. The 17 rooms are spacious and have private terraces; guests can upgrade to a townhouse for more luxury (and space). Free wine by the fire pit at happy hour encourages mingling, but this place is really best for couples looking for a laid-back feel and a central location.

Location

One block from downtown Palm Springs in the Movie Colony neighborhood

Built by famed architect Albert Frey in the 1930s, the Movie Colony Hotel and the surrounding neighborhood is known for its former celebrity dwellers. Tales of Jim Morrison, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are still told at the hotel. And Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant and Dinah Shore all owned homes in the neighborhood, which is now home to a 5-acre wellness park with exercise stations and meditation gardens and is just a block from downtown Palm Springs.Once known as a destination only suited for spring breakers or retirees, Palm Springs has become a classy and clean desert destination for anyone looking for an uncluttered city with resort amenities. With a healthy gay scene and the Coachella valley (and music festival) just over 30 minutes away, the Palm Springs crowd is slowly becoming harder and harder to define. Most who come are there to spend, exercise and relax.- 8-minute drive to airport

  • 15-minute walk to Palm Springs Art Museum
  • 2-hour drive to Los Angeles
  • 2-hour drive to the beach
