The Breakers
1 South County Road

This sprawling 140-acre resort feels more like a Renaissance palace than a hotel. The oceanfront grounds are defined by historic architecture and elegant landscaping, and the extensive features include five swimming pools, two 18-hole golf courses, 10 tennis courts, nine restaurants, and 10 boutique shops. The Breakers’ 540 rooms include all of the modern amenities -- minibars, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and iPod stereos -- but most feel a bit cramped for the price. The only major downside of The Breakers is its expensive, albeit delicious, on-site dining: A family of four could easily spend $350 a day on food, without ordering anything special. As far as competing hotels in Palm Beach go, nothing compares to the luxury found at this iconic property.

Four Seasons Resort, Palm Beach
2800 South Ocean Boulevard

The Four Seasons Resort is located on a relatively quiet stretch of sand about a 10-minute drive south of the area's main attractions. The 210 rooms are decorated in sophisticated beach style, with a blue, white and cream color scheme, and have private balconies. There are thoughtful amenities for families; the chic spa is a high point; and guests can expect extra touches like water spritzes and sunscreen at the (smallish) ocean-view pool. But some may feel the property isn't quite up to the usual Four Seasons standard: The building exterior is short on curb appeal, rooms lack "wow" factor, and some have complained that poolside and beachside service could be better.

Bradley Park Hotel
280 Sunset Ave

The two-and-a-half-pearl Bradley Park Hotel is one of Palm Beach’s most historical properties, although much of its original 1920’s charm has faded. However, guests willing to overlook the imperfections will find it to be one of the best values in the otherwise stratospherically priced Palm Beach area. The 32 rooms offer a basic, traditional feel but decent amenities include large, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and optional kitchens. Fine-dining is available at the surprisingly intimate Italian Restaurant, Trevini. Alternatively, guests can stock their optional kitchens with gourmet treats from the on-site market. For higher rates, Hilton West Palm Beach offers more amenities, like a gorgeous pool, and panache.

The Brazilian Court Hotel
301 Australian Ave

The four-pearl Brazilian Court Hotel is an intimate, boutique option with a healthy dose of elegant Spanish Colonial charm that was originally built in the 1920s. What it lacks in the scale of amenities, it makes up for with the quality of what's on offer: an elegant French restaurant by Daniel Boulud, a Frédéric Fekkai salon, and an intimate heated pool set among garden grounds with tinkling fountains. Plus, it’s two blocks from one of South Florida’s most beautiful beaches. All 80 rooms feel regal with free Wi-Fi, wet bars, full minibars, and jetted soaking tubs. Suites upgrade to spacious layouts with multiple bathrooms. Expect to pay extra for parking, but airport transfers are free. As an alternative, the Hilton West Palm Beach has a more modern vibe, plus additional features and lower rates.

The Chesterfield Palm Beach
363 Cocoanut Row

The Chesterfield Hotel is a 53-room boutique hotel that is also a historic landmark. Although the hotel does offer babysitting services, it is more of a romantic getaway for couples than a vacation spot for families. Room rates are in line with other nearby upscale hotels on the island of Palm Beach. The individually decorated rooms are sophisticated, often incorporating bold and colorful fabrics, and are meant to resemble those in a European-style bed and breakfast.

Tideline Ocean Resort & Spa
2842 South Ocean Boulevard

The four-pearl Tideline Resort & Spa is one of Palm Beach’s chicest and newest hotels (it used to be the Omphoy). It checks all the boxes for an upscale oceanfront resort, including a fine-dining restaurant, sushi bar, a full-service spa, gorgeous outdoor pool, and a semi-private stretch of one of South Florida’s most pristine beaches. All 134 rooms feature a modern, Asian-inspired decor and come with premium minibars, flat-screen TVs, and private balconies -- some with ocean views. However, the slightly sterile public area decor, and pricey restaurant and valet parking are all difficult to overlook. For similar rates, The Chesterfield Palm Beach has a more central location and historical European-inspired charm.

Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa
100 S Ocean Blvd

Even in ultra-luxurious Palm Beach County, the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa stands out from the five-pearl pack (with a little help from the hotel's past life as a Ritz-Carlton property). From the palatial, world-class spa to the fine-dining restaurants and bars to one of the area’s most postcard-worthy beaches, every amenity is top-notch. The 309 rooms were designed by Jonathan Adler. Each is spacious, bright, and luxuriously appointed with premium minibars, chic bathrooms, and private balconies (many with ocean views). The location in Manalapan is farther than most hotels from the action, at about a 25-minute drive to popular CityPlace. For a more boutique experience and lower rates (albeit without the beach) check out The Brazilian Court Hotel.
