Bottom Line

Although the three-pearl Hotel Alga isn’t a beachfront property, it still has a quiet and convenient location 10 minutes on foot from Canadell Beach and the village center. The 59 simple, yet clean, rooms have comfortable beds, air-conditioning, and minibars; several have sea-facing balconies. Well-maintained facilities include an airy bar and restaurant where free breakfast is served, a lovely garden with a pool, and kid-friendly features like an outdoor play area and a separate children’s pool. For a more scenic location that's closer to the beach, check rates at the cliffside Hotel Mediterrani -- but note that it lacks a pool.

Scene

Quiet and family-friendly property with slightly generic design, but beautiful art and outdoor garden

With clean facilities and a quiet environment, this property might be too slow paced for anyone expecting a livelier ambience, but it's well-suited to families looking for a simple but well-maintained hotel. The interiors of the older building have been completely renovated for a more modern look that's slightly bland. However, they escape feeling entirely generic thanks to the numerous sculptures, wall paintings, and artifacts peppered throughout the common areas that reflect the surrounding area’s culture and scenery. Beautifully landscaped gardens featuring small ponds and winding walking paths add to the serene atmosphere.

Location

On a quiet, residential street; a short walk to village center and 10 minutes to Canadell Beach

The peaceful atmosphere inside the hotel is matched by its quiet residential surroundings, but the location is still ideal for tourists given that the village center and the popular Canadell Beach are both a five- to 10-minute walk away. Pesca Beach is a 13-minute walk from the hotel. The neighboring town of Llafranc is 14 minutes away on foot. It’s a six-minute drive to the Cap Roig Botanical Gardens. Girona Airport is a 45-minute drive away. The hotel  provides airport transfers for fees.

Rooms

Modern but minimalist; some with balconies and sea views

Renovated rooms are clean and spacious. Parquet floors, neutral colors, and modern furnishings are well-maintained, and beds are comfortable, but the minimalist design and bare walls don’t have much of a wow factor. Large windows do make for bright spaces, though, and some rooms feature furnished terraces with beautiful sea views. Other rooms overlook the parking lot. Rooms come with air-conditioning, small flat-screen TVs, desks, safes, and free Wi-Fi. All rooms have well-stocked minibars, but only Family Rooms have coffeemakers. Family Rooms and Suites also have separate rooms with sofa beds.Neutral-toned bathrooms are sleek and contemporary but compromise privacy in some rooms, where they’re separated from the bedrooms with a partial wall instead of a door. Standard bathrooms have walk-in showers with handheld and rainfall showerheads. Family rooms and Suites feature additional bathtubs. Hairdryers and toiletries are provided in all bathrooms.

Features

Free breakfast buffet, outdoor adult and children’s pools, bicycles available for rent

Features here focus on families. El Cantir restaurant is a large, refurbished space offering plenty of seating in the sunny interior space with glass walls and a lovely display of local pottery. Guests can dine on a patio facing the pool and gardens, or outside right by the pool. The menu emphasizes local produce and seafood, with a small selection of salads, sandwiches, and tapas. Breakfast, included with all rates, is offered buffet-style and features a decent spread of continental items, plus bacon and eggs. The restaurant’s attached bar is airy and casual, with large windows and both table and counter seating, plus a separate area with a TV. Room service is available. The hotel lacks a gym but massage services are available for fees. The large outdoor pool is kept in clean condition and has lots of seating options, so doesn’t feel overly crowded. The area also has a separate children’s pool. Other kid-friendly amenities include swings and a play set in the garden area. The garden also offers a ping-pong table and a tennis court. Bicycles can be rented for fees. Two indoor meeting rooms are available, along with a business center and two computers.  Wi-Fi throughout the property is free. On-site parking must be booked in advance, and comes with extra fees, as does laundry and ironing services.
