Bottom Line

Travelodge Outer Banks/Kill Devil Hills is a solid budget stay, and one of the larger hotels in town. The two-pearl property is a block from the beach, and lacks the direct access and ocean views that many of its competitors offer.  But its 96 affordable guest rooms are tidy and comfortable, and all are well-equipped with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, microwaves, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are basic, with shower/tub combos and hairdryers, but toiletries are skimpy. Facilities are limited to a seasonal outdoor pool and patio with sun loungers, and a breakfast pantry where a free continental breakfast is served. Travelers who prefer staying on the beach should check out the Days Inn Kill Devil Hills Oceanfront–Wilbur.

Scene

Families and couples hang out by a pleasant pool, on a patio with loungers

When the couples and families who frequent this hotel aren't at the beach, or out at one of Kill Devil Hills's restaurants, they're at the hotel's pool. It's a decent size, and surrounded by a white fence in the parking lot. Palm trees, shrubs, and a small waterfall are tucked in the mouth of one if its curves, and the patio has plenty of pretty blue-and-white-striped sun loungers, plus a few tables with umbrellas. Inside the lobby, the reception desk and small breakfast pantry share the same space, with diner-style tables and chairs fanning our around the room. It's rarely busy, as the hotel's atmosphere tends to be quiet.

Location

Off the main drag, not on the beach or within walking distance of most restaurants

The hotel is located in a residential area off North Virginia Dare Trail (Route 12), about a two-minute walk from the beach. To the west, Wright Brothers National Memorial is roughly a five-minute drive along a winding road. North Croatan Highway, which runs parallel to North Virginia Dare Trail, is the main drag of Kill Devil Hills's tourist area. Surf shops, ice cream stands, and fast-food and seafood restaurants, aren't within walking distance, but they're a two-minute drive south.Scenic Jockey's Ridge State Park, which is the tallest living sand dune on the Atlantic coast, is about an eight-minute drive from the hotel. Roanoke Island Festival Park and North Carolina Aquarium are a 26-minute drive away, while Corolla -- home to famous wild horses -- is about 45 minutes up the road. Norfolk International Airport takes just over 90 minutes to reach by car.

Rooms

Tidy and comfortable, with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and microwaves, but skimpy toiletries

While decor in guest rooms is dated, guests have noted that units are exceptionally clean and comfortable. Expect stuffy bedspreads, with a floral pattern that clashes with the multicolored carpeting, and aged drapes. The furniture is somewhat mismatched, but low chests with drawers and headboards are made from rustic, solid knotted wood. All units have small seating areas with tables and chairs, wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, microwaves, coffeemakers, AC, and free Wi-Fi. The tiled bathrooms are basic, with shower/tub combos, and there are hairdryers, but toiletries are skimpy. Most rooms have small, furnished balconies. Suites add living rooms with couches and wet bars. Pet-friendly rooms are available on the first floor.

Features

Seasonal outdoor pool, plus free continental breakfast and on-site parking

This hotel offers good amenities for a property in its category. There's a seasonal outdoor pool surrounded by a patio with sun loungers, and a few tables and chairs with umbrellas. A free continental breakfast is served in the lobby/breakfast room, and there's a computer workstation and printer that's free to use. There's also free on-site parking and Wi-Fi throughout. Kids under 17 years old stay free, and the hotel is pet-friendly, with one pet included in the room rate.
