ByWard Blue Inn
157 Clarence St

The mid-range ByWard Blue Inn offers comfortable accommodations for affordable rates in a central Ottawa location. It's situated on the edge of bustling ByWard Market, and although it's surrounded by restaurants and nightclubs, the property's street is residential and relatively peaceful. The 46 studio-style guest rooms are contemporary and very well-maintained, with hardwood floors and nicely equipped kitchenettes. Many units feature balconies with city views. There's no full restaurant or fitness center, but freebies include hot breakfast, loaner laptops, afternoon tea with treats, and a sauna that can be reserved. Travelers looking for a property with more amenities such as a restaurant and pool can check out Cartier Place Suites Hotel.

Swiss Hotel
89 Daly Ave

This charming family-owned mid-range hotel makes a great base for tourists and business travelers alike with its convenient location right by ByWard Market. The 22 guest rooms are small, but loaded with amenities, including iPads, flat-screen TVs, Nespresso machines, and iPod radios, plus some have fireplaces (and one even has a whirlpool). A Swiss-style breakfast gets great reviews from guests, but incurs a fee. There's a lovely little outdoor patio where guests can enjoy breakfast alfresco, but other than a meeting room and business corner, there's not much else here in terms of features. Note that kids under the age of 12 aren't allowed. For something with more amenities, check out The Westin Ottawa, which has a gym, squash courts, indoor pool, steakhouse, and bar -- but rates are more expensive.

The Westin Ottawa
11 Colonel By Drive

The upscale Westin Ottawa has a convenient location adjacent to the Rideau Canal and connected to the Shaw Centre and Rideau Centre shopping mall. Given its central location, the 24-story hotel buzzes with activity, from meetings and government events to leisure travelers. Highlights include a large fitness center, indoor pool/whirlpool, fine-dining steakhouse, concierge, and 44,000 square feet of event space. Its 495 rooms are slightly bland, equipped with mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and robes. Wi-Fi isn’t free for many guests, and some rooms have no views. Rates are competitive for its location and category, but the upscale Ottawa Marriott Hotel typically has better rates. It’s downtown but not as centrally located, however.

Hampton Inn by Hilton Ottawa
100 Coventry Rd

The 179-room Hampton Inn By Hilton Ottawa is a two-and-a-half-pearl property near downtown, offering some perks for those willing to forego an up-to-date look. Large rooms with comfy beds and kitchenettes tick a lot of boxes, and those with sleeper sofas are great for families or groups. A leisure, family, and business presence join frequent hockey groups here, and while free breakfasts get crowded, the indoor pool and modern gym are less busy. Further pros include conference spaces and free parking. There are no bar or restaurant on-site, but food courts at the nearby mall are a short drive, as are downtown Ottawa's eateries. Travelers looking to be right downtown should check out the [Cartier Place Suite Hotel](Cartier Place Suite Hotel).

Cartier Place Suite Hotel
180 Cooper St

The Cartier Place Suite Hotel is an attractive option for anyone who wants affordable, residence-style accommodations in downtown Ottawa. The family owned and operated hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of restaurants and most of Ottawa’s top attractions. The 250 suites have dated decor, but they're comfortable and have full kitchens, sleeper sofas, and private balconies. Highlight features include a fitness center, an indoor pool, a sauna, and game rooms. Parking is on-site, but it’s expensive, and Wi-Fi is free, but it can be spotty. Travelers looking for a similar property that offers free breakfast can check out the Best Western Plus Ottawa Downtown Suites.

Travelodge Ottawa West
1376 Carling Ave, Carling and Kirkwood

Travelodge Ottawa West is a mid-range property situated in the Carlington area, not far from downtown Ottawa. The 196 rooms are simple but pleasant, and come with flat-screen TVs and cherry-finish furniture, and the option of microwaves and mini-fridges. However, it's the facilities that really stand out. For families, there's a huge water park with a big slide and a splash pool. Convention planners will appreciate the large amount of meeting space. There's also a fitness center (though it's limited) as well as coin-operated laundry facilities, and a free continental breakfast is served daily. However, as the hotel's not downtown, guests might find they need a car, and parking can be limited due to nearby construction (as of summer 2018). For something in the city center, consider the three-pearl Cartier Place Suite Hotel, which offers rooms with kitchens and a better gym.

Albert at Bay Suite Hotel
435 Albert Street

The three-pearl Albert at Bay Suite Hotel is a good overall value for travelers seeking residence-style accommodations in downtown Ottawa. The property's 197 apartment-style suites are streamlined and exceptionally spacious, with full kitchens and living rooms with sleeper sofas. All units have flat-screen TVs, robes, Seattle's Best coffee, and free Wi-Fi. Several suites also have private balconies and two bathrooms. The hotel's on-site restaurant was under closed pending new owners at the time of our visit, but other features include a well-equipped rooftop fitness center and terrace with city views, plus a 24-hour convenience store and business center. Travelers looking for a stay with a pool can consider Ottawa Marriott Hotel, but rates are higher.

Brookstreet Hotel
525 Legget Dr

The upscale Brookstreet Hotel is a good choice for anyone who doesn’t need to stay close to downtown Ottawa, which is a 25-minute drive away. This is a modern hotel packed with amenities that keep it busy year-round. Adjacent to a 27-hole golf course, Brookstreet features indoor/outdoor pools, a huge fitness center, full-service spa, fine-dining restaurant, kids’ game room, and a jazz club. Free shuttle service to the Canadian Tire Centre is a welcome perk. Rooms are stylish, spacious, and well-equipped with minibars, Keurig coffeemakers, and upscale bathrooms. Rates are surprisingly affordable for all that’s offered. For an upscale hotel experience in the heart of downtown, the Westin Ottawa is attached to Shaw Centre and Rideau Centre shopping mall.

The Business Inn & Suites
180 Maclaren St, at Elgin

The three-pearl Business Inn & Suites offers spacious suites in central Ottawa, within walking distance of the World Exchange Plaza, Rideau Canal, and CF Rideau Centre Mall. In addition to comfy beds and 46-inch flat-screen TVs, each of the 158 Suites features a full kitchen, computer with printer, and free Wi-Fi, and some units have balconies with skyline views. Suites are a bit functional-looking and dated, but all are clean and well-maintained. The hotel also offers a fitness center, restaurant and bar, and excellent free breakfast with hot egg sandwiches. The nearby Cartier Place Suite Hotel also has units with kitchens, plus an indoor pool and hot tub, but it's typically pricier and doesn't offer free breakfast.

Best Western Plus Ottawa Downtown Suites
377 O'Connor St

The three-pearl Best Western Plus Ottawa Downtown Suites is a solid choice for business and leisure travelers seeking a stay that's convenient to the city but removed from the hustle and bustle. The property is located in a quiet area south of central Ottawa, and its 123 units are comfortable, with a mix of traditional and contemporary decor. All guest rooms contain kitchenettes with microwaves and mini-fridges, and standard amenities include flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. The free hot breakfast offered in a space with outdoor seating, and the rooftop fitness center with a sauna are highlights, but there's no full-service restaurant, and on-site parking costs extra. Travelers looking for accommodations with a pool can check out Hotel Indigo Ottawa Downtown, but rates are slightly higher.
