The upscale 99-room Clarion Collection Hotel Bastion brings English ambience to Oslo with afternoon tea, a lobby bar, free dinner, and a free breakfast in a sometimes hectic dining room. Decorated in classic English style, rooms and suites come with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers; some have balconies and whirlpool tubs, and views of the nearby Opera House. Adjoining Children’s Rooms have fun-themed decor. Four meeting rooms and office services are convenient for business travelers, and the hotel also has a small fitness center and sauna, and a computer station. The hotel is traditional and homey, but shows wear in places. Travelers looking for a hipper decor and vibe might want to consider the Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel.
Scene
Proper English ambience in Oslo
The Clarion Collection Hotel Bastion mixes English style with Scandinavian design. While the exterior is unexciting, interiors are pleasant and welcoming. Tufted chairs offer comfortable seating under a pitched skylight in the lobby lounge, and stocked bookshelves contribute to the homey atmosphere. Wooden paneled lobby walls continue to the front desk, which also serves as a bar. Loose-leaf tea and coffee are available at no extra charge in the reception area, along with newspapers. Reasonable room rates, welcoming interiors, business services, and a convenient location draw couples, business travelers, and vacationing families -- the staff has been known to on occasion transform a meeting room into a children’s play area with toys and DVD movies.
Location
Across the bay from the Oslo Opera House and near public transportation
The hotel is located near the waterfront, with the Oslo Opera House across the bay and Oslo Central Station 10 minutes away on foot. The location isn’t the most scenic, and guests complain that it can feel a bit dicey at night. Restaurants, cafes, and street musicians populate Oslo’s main thoroughfare, Karl Johans Gate, which is a 10-minute walk away. It’s a 15-minute bus ride to Aker Brygge, a popular area with benches on the waterfront, and vendors. While not many sights are in the hotel's immediate vicinity, there's several transportation links that connect to the the Royal Palace, National Theater, and Oslo City Hall in 10 to 15 minutes. By train or car it’s 40 minutes to Oslo Airport. The Holmenkollen Ski Jump is one hour by public transportation.
Rooms
Classic rooms and suites with traditional English style and modern features; some with balconies
The English-style decor in the common areas continues to the rooms. Last renovated in 2009, some rooms could use a touch-up. While layouts and decor differ, rooms have wood parquet floors, antique-style furniture, trouser presses, and irons. Some top-floor rooms have balconies and views of the Opera House. All rooms come with free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges or minibars, safes, flat-screen TVs, and tea/coffeemakers. Superior and Deluxe Rooms are larger, and Suites have separate sitting areas. Adjoining Children’s Rooms are available with fun jungle-themed designs. White-tiled bathrooms have shower/tub combos, but Suites and Deluxe Plus Rooms have separate whirlpool tubs and rainfall showerheads.
