Bottom Line

The 146-room Villas of Grand Cypress Golf Resort, a luxurious Hyatt hotel, sits on 1,500 acres of landscaped grounds, including a lake and a 45-hole golf course. All rooms were completely renovated in 2013. While the resort is especially geared toward golfers and can make a great adult golf getaway, there are activities for all ages, including fishing, boating, bikes, a pool, and tennis courts. It would be a good family destination even if Disney were not right next door.

Scene

Lush landscaping for the golf enthusiast

The grounds and public areas of the Villas of Grand Cypress Resort have a distinct clubby feel thanks to the lines of golf carts meandering the paths and the packs of golfers everywhere. They are typically dressed in polo shirts and clustered in the bars, snack areas, and, at night, Nine-18, the resort's fine dining restaurant. Great care has been taken with landscaping, and there are fountains, paintings, and sculptures scattered around, giving the place a peaceful, luxurious feeling. The large lake has a white-sand beach, and sailboats, paddle boats and aqua-cycles are available for free, as is fishing gear, although the lake and other waterways are catch-and-release only. Bike rentals are available for meandering along the resort pathways. It's an attractive luxury pick for golfers and families.

Location

Nestled on a peaceful golf course, but right by Disney

The Villas of Grand Cypress Resort's location combines the best of both worlds: It's tucked away from the busy, concrete sprawl of downtown Orlando but an easy drive to Disney, Universal, and SeaWorld. (Disney is a six-minute drive, Sea World is 12 minutes, and Universal is 15.) The resort's serene 21-acre Lake Windsong has a white-sand beach, and guests can take a break from the whirlwind tour of amusement parks by fishing from one of the free sailboats (although the fish have to be thrown back).

Rooms

Rooms with exquisite Shabui stacked stone bathrooms and luxury tubs

The modern suites and villas at the Grand Cypress Resort were renovated in 2013 with luxury and privacy in mind. Rooms are tastefully decorated in warm browns, and have leather chairs and sofas, plush carpets, wooden blinds, and sunken sitting areas. Bathrooms are spectacular, with stylish Shabui stacked stone on the walls, deep, freestanding tubs, stunning glass shower stalls with rain showerheads, and a 19-inch flat screen TV inside the vanity mirror. Amenities include Keurig coffeemakers, iPod docks, free Wi-fi, and large flat-screen TVs with HBO. Villas have big kitchens, each with a full-size stove, oven, refrigerator, blender, toaster, microwave, and dishwasher.

Features

Rock climbing, fishing, and a spa

Golf is the centerpiece of the Villas of Grand Cypress Resort, with putting greens, the Academy of Golf, and four courses on the grounds. Fishing, sailing, paddle boating, a 24-foot rock climbing wall, tennis, and a big pool with whirlpool with adjacent snack cabana are also available. Nine-18, an upscale contemporary American restaurant, serves dinner only, and features a 500-bottle wine cellar. The Club Restaurant and Sports Bar feels at once casual and clubby. Ice cream socials, pizza parties and more are scheduled for kids, while in-room massages are available for adults.
