Bottom Line

The Lodge at Suttle Lake is a small woodsy retreat with a total of 26 rooms and cabins. This upper-middle-range property centers around a huge main lodge, which houses 10 suites, some with stone fireplaces, plus there are a few types of cabins available as well that range from rustic to luxurious. Amenities include a small on-site restaurant, a spa, and plenty of organized summer activities, including fly-fishing, rafting, and mountain biking. However, there have been a few complaints from past guests about traffic noise from the nearby road, uncomfortable beds, and maintenance issues. Wi-Fi is free, but it's only available in the lodge part of the property. Travelers seeking a cabin getaway with a bit more charm might also want to consider the nearby Five Pine Lodge & Spa. **THIS PROPERTY RE-OPENED IN JULY 2016 AS THE SUTTLE LODGE & BOATHOUSE FOLLOWING A $1 MILLION RENOVATION. **WE WILL UPDATE OUR REVIEW AS SOON AS WE CAN.

Scene

Rustic forest property with a main lodge and additional cabins

The Lodge at Suttle Lake is a lakeside cabin resort popular with families visiting the Oregon wilderness, as well as being host to weddings and corporate retreats. The charming main lodge looks like a massive wood cabin from the outside, a theme that continues in the cozy wooden lobby, which features a large stone fireplace and a mezzanine area on the upper level where most of the lodge suites are located. Additional cabins are situated around the grounds, and there's a large lake for boating, fly fishing, and swimming when the weather permits.

Location

Forest location on Suttle Lake, a short drive from Bend

The hotel is located on the banks of Suttle Lake between the Willamette and Mount Hood National Forest in central Oregon, a 20-minute drive from the town of Sisters and a 45-minute drive from Bend. The location suits travelers seeking a dose of nature and the outdoors, and there's not much within walking distance. There have been some complaints about traffic noise from a main road that passes near the property, however. Portland can be reached in about two-and-a-half hours.

Rooms

Cabins and Lodge Suites with woodsy decor, some with kitchenettes and some pet-friendly

There are 26 units in all, namely 10 Lodge Suites and an additional 16 cabins. Decor is similar in many of the units and includes carpeted floors, wooden beds with red Southwestern-print throw cushions, and rustic wood furniture as well as fireplaces in some. But some guests complain of uncomfortable beds, and many units have old tube-style TVs. Nevertheless, the suites and cabins are cozy and full of rustic charm. Many of the cabins have kitchens, though there have been complaints of old crockery. Rustic Cabins are also available, and while they have electricity, they lack running water and bathroom facilities. (Guests instead are given keys to communal bathrooms and showers.) Pets are welcome in all Rustic Cabins and some of the other cabins with prior notice, for a one-off fee.

Features

Hiking trails, on-site lake for fishing and swimming, basic restaurant with free breakfast, and Wi-Fi

There are no fitness facilities or pools at The Lodge at Suttle Lake -- instead, active guests can go hiking or mountain biking on one of the surrounding trails as well as swimming or fly-fishing in the lake. There's also a gift shop as well as a restaurant serving items such as sandwiches and salads, but it gets mixed reviews. Breakfast is included in room rates, and continental breakfast baskets are delivered to the cabins every morning. Event spaces are available for meetings and weddings. Wi-Fi is free in the lodge, but it doesn't extend to most of the cabins.
