Bottom Line

The charming, upper-middle-range Cannon Beach Hotel is located on Hemlock Street, the quaint beach town's main thoroughfare. All 10 rooms are elegant, with Edwardian-style decor, and some have four-poster beds, fireplaces, and clawfoot tubs. Although amenities are limited at this tiny boutique property, there's an excellent on-site cafe with a breakfast service (only for hotel guests) and all guests get free access to nearby Cannon Beach Fitness, open 24-hours daily. The beach is just a block away; for something with direct access to the seashore, guests could check out the slightly larger Ocean Lodge

Scene

A quaint, century-old inn popular with vacationing couples

Opened in 1914, this two-story clapboard property is easily one of the more charming small inns in Cannon Beach. The ground floor is split between the cozy lobby and the hotel's quaint, on-site cafe, where the free daily breakfast is served. The lobby is welcoming and bright on entrance, with white walls and dark trim near the wooden front desk. Continuing into the lobby's lounge space, walls are painted pale brown with white trim, nicely setting off the polished wood floors, beige armchairs, and comfy red couch. Other elegant touches include handsome wooden end tables and a fireplace painted white, above which hang a pair of sconce lights with white lamp shades. The cafe has a Parisian vibe, with a pressed tin ceiling, red walls, and black and white tile floors. The hotel caters primarily to older vacationing couples, and the property discourages guests under 16 years of age.

Location

On South Hemlock Street, near Haystack Rock

The Cannon Beach Hotel is located on South Hemlock Street, the main thoroughfare that runs through the beach town. The property is about a 10-minute walk south of the main "downtown" area of Cannon Beach, home to lots of quaint art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. It's also about a block away from the beach, right by the town's landmark Haystack Rock. Cannon Beach is a 90-minute drive from Portland, and about an hour and 45 minutes from the airport.

Rooms

Elegant rooms and suites, many with four-poster beds, fireplaces, and clawfoot tubs

Cannon Beach Hotel has nine rooms and a single suite, all with elegant and old-fashioned (but not stuffy) decor that draws inspiration from the Edwardian era. As with the lobby, the decor nicely combines elegant shades of beige with white trim, dark and white wood, and small lamps for soft, golden lighting, and many rooms have some combination of four-poster beds, fireplaces, and clawfoot bathtubs. Upscale touches in various rooms -- bronze telescopes, original artwork, and woven cafe-style chairs -- add to the appeal. All rooms have flat-screen TVs with DVD players. (There's a DVD library in the lobby for guests.) Other amenities include bathrobes, free Wi-Fi, and custom SeaCloud mattresses. The Suite offers a separate living and dining area, complete with a kitchenette and a breakfast bar.

Features

Free breakfast in on-site cafe plus local gym access

A free breakfast buffet is served every morning at the hotel's on-site Cannon Beach Cafe, and includes unusual items such as hash brown casseroles, frittata, homemade granola, and seasonal pastries. Guests can also take their breakfast trays up to their rooms. The cafe is solely open to hotel guests in the morning, but opens up to the public for lunch and dinner (from April through November; it's closed in the low season). The menu relies heavily on locally sourced and organic ingredients, and there are always plenty of vegan and gluten-free options. Though there's no fitness center, all guests get free access to nearby Cannon Beach Fitness, open 24 hours a day. Wi-Fi and parking are free.
