Bottom Line

Cannery Pier Hotel is a luxury boutique hotel that sits practically on top of the Columbia River; it's literally built 600 feet out into the water on top of the pilings of the old Union Fish Cannery. With outstanding views (rooms look directly out onto the river) and upscale amenities, the hotel is a good choice for the high-end traveler who doesn't mind that it's located a bit more than a mile from the center of Astoria. It's a better choice for couples than families, as there's plenty of romantic touches inside the guest rooms -- like gas fireplaces -- and in common spaces  -- like a nightly wine reception -- geared towards adults. There's an on-site spa, fitness center, free Wi-Fi, complimentary daily breakfast, and two classic cars that shuttle guests around the area -- but no restaurant on-site.

Scene

Dramatic lobby views bring the hotel's enviable location indoors

The Cannery Pier Hotel's dramatic red exterior and location on the Columbia River impresses from the get-go. Once inside the lobby, the hotel continues to make a statement. Giant floor-to-ceiling windows let the sunlight and views pour in and the light hardwood floors and neutral furnishings let the hotel's unique location take center stage. Contemporary furniture is clustered around a fireplace set with bookshelves. Sculptures and artwork depicting local scenes line the shelves. Neutral-color wicker chairs and matching ottomans are placed in a row in front of the windows, so guests can comfortably admire the river views.

Location

Located on the Columbia River, about a mile from the center of Astoria

The Cannery Pier Hotel has a dramatic location on the Columbia River, directly on the site of the old Union Fish Cannery. It's hard to imagine better views: guests can easily see Cape Disappointment Lighthouse (which does not disappoint), Washington state, and the Astoria-Megler Bridge. There's a high-end restaurant called Bridgewater Bistro within a short walk of the hotel, but the majority of dining requires a car ride. The hotel does provide rides in classic cars in the evenings free of charge for guests. Astoria itself is about one mile from the hotel, the city has a small-town atmosphere and several cultural attractions like the Columbia River Maritime Museum, the Flavel House Museum, and Fort Clatsop National Memorial.

Rooms

Contemporary and comfortable with fireplaces, soaking tubs, and scenic river views

Guest rooms, suites, and an apartment-style Pilot House are gorgeously decorated and tricked out with modern amenities, but the real highlight of the rooms are the almost unbelievable views of the river and Astoria-Megler Bridge from small decks. The Deluxe King Room has partial wood laminate floors and partial textured carpet. Contemporary furniture includes a small gray sofa and wooden table and chairs in front of a gas fireplace. A pair of binoculars sits next to the window seat, set with a soft throw. Shutters separate the bedroom from the bathroom. A claw-foot bathtub, rainhead shower, and basket filled with toiletries make up the luxe bathrooms. Free Wi-Fi, minibars, coffeemakers, a microwave, and mini-fridge are standard. The Pilot House has a full kitchen with stainless steel appliances. For canine guests, the hotel provides dog beds and treats.

Features

Free continental breakfast, wine reception, and chauffeured classic cars

There isn't a restaurant or a bar at the Cannery Pier Hotel, but there are several workarounds. A free continental breakfast is served every morning and there's a complimentary wine reception every evening. If a guest needs a ride to town, the hotel will give them one in a classic car. There's an on-site spa for treatments and an indoor hot tub that faces the river, with an adjacent sauna. The fitness center is clean but a bit cramped. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property and there are on-site meeting rooms and event spaces. Guests can borrow bikes to explore the area on two wheels.
