Bottom Line

The Ashland Hills Hotel and Suites is a 100-room, mid-range property on the outskirts of Ashland, with lots of perks not usually found in hotels at this price point. Moderately retro-style rooms and suites have flat-screen TVs, fridges, and coffeemakers, and some have private balconies. Some of the suites have pull-out sofa beds, but the hotel charges an extra fee for their use. Breakfast is included in room rates and Wi-Fi and parking are free. There's also a pair of tennis courts, an outdoor pool, a hot tub, and a tiny, worn fitness center, but no restaurant for lunch and dinner. Visitors may want to check out the similarly priced Best Western Windsor Inn, which also offers a free breakfast and has nicer fitness facilities.

Scene

Boutique hotel with 1970s accents, popular with leisure tourists and families

Ashland Hills Hotel & Suites sits on a 14-acre property and offers a bit more pizazz than the average hotel in its price range. Housed in a structure that dates back to 1978, the property looks like a standard chain hotel from the outside and indeed used to be one, until it was taken over by a local couple and transformed into the retro boutique hotel it is today. The stylish lobby features wooden floors, funky statuary, and a long reception desk in front of a wall decorated with orange and lime-green psychedelic prints. There are also a couple of chic seating areas with cowhide rugs, abstract art on the walls, trendy lighting fixtures, and colorful, contemporary seating that includes lime-green, crushed-velvet sofas. Outdoors, there's a patio with a barbecue grill and orange lounge chairs and tables, while a paved path weaves through the tree-lined, neatly landscaped grounds. The hotel mainly draws leisure travelers visiting local attractions such as the Shakespeare Festival or Southern Oregon University. Small pets are welcome for a fee, and families should note that children under the age of 12 stay for free.

Location

On the outskirts of Ashland, a short drive to Southern Oregon University

The Ashland Hills Hotel & Suites is located just off I-5 (exit 14), a 20-minute drive north of the Oregon/California border. It's right by the Ashland Municipal Airport, and it's a five-minute drive to Southern Oregon University and less than a 10-minute drive into the center of town. The hot springs at Jackson Wellspring are about an eight-minute drive from the hotel. The closest commercial airport is in Medford, a 20-minute drive away. Crater Lake National Park is about an hour and a half away by car. It's a three-hour drive to Eugene and a four-and-a-half-hour drive to Portland, Oregon.

Rooms

Rooms and suites with 1970s design accents, some with balconies

The hotel offers a variety of rooms and suite configurations, most of which have simple generic hotel decor with some 1970s touches such as retro molded chairs and tables or colorful vintage art pieces on the walls. Standard amenities in all units include flat-screen TVs with cable and premium channels, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers, and some have private patios or balconies. Suites also have microwaves, and some have pull-out sofa beds, but the hotel charges extra for their use, which is especially odd considering children under 12 years of age stay for free. Bathrooms come with hairdryers and Gilchrist & Soames toiletries, and those in suites have double vanities. Most have shower/tub combos, though Junior Suites have both walk-in rainfall showers and whirlpool tubs.

Features

Free continental breakfast, tennis courts with great views, seasonal pool and hot tub, and tiny fitness room

The Ashland Hills Hotel & Suites offers a free continental breakfast to all guests, and free coffee, tea, and apples are available in the lobby around the clock. Loaner bicycles are also available for exploring the surrounding area and the property has a pair of outdoor tennis courts with gorgeous views of the countryside. There's a small seasonal outdoor pool with plenty of retro '70s-style orange lounge chairs as well as a compact whirlpool hot tub. The hotel's dated fitness center is tiny and decked out with old green carpet, a small tube TV, and three cardio machines. The adjoining business center has two PC computers and printers for guests' use. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and there's plenty of on-site parking. Small pets are welcome for a fee, and children under 12 stay free.
