This 129-room surfer-themed hotel is mere steps from the crashing waves and soft white sands of the Pacific Ocean, and a short walk to the palm-tree lined streets, restaurants, bars, boutique shops, and art galleries of Laguna Beach. It's a bit pricey for what you get -- there can be a shortage of beach chairs and some rooms can get noisy -- but there are nice common areas, as well as a restaurant overlooking the beach and a small pool with a whirlpool. For a similar hotel with a lower price point, try the Inn at Laguna Beach.

Somewhat pricey unique, old-style beach hotel that's a stone's throw from the ocean
Located as close to the ocean as you can get without paddling in it, Pacific Edge offers everything the beach vacationer might need, including sandcastle contests, sunset Polaroids, scavenger hunts, and yoga on the beach. The hotel also has a large game room with orange walls, plenty of seating, and a bar area, flat-screen TV, and ping pong table. While the on-site pool is a popular spot for kids and adults, the sprawling, multi-story restaurant -- with fresh seafood and an extensive wine list that attracts Laguna locals -- doesn't have many kid-friendly options.

Centrally located -- a short distance to the beach, cliffs, and unique local boutiques
Staying at the hotel means you're only a short walk or drive to the local attractions, including Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Playhouse, Pacific Marine Mammal Center, and Heilser Park, from which you can see spectacular views of the ocean from the bluffs. It's a 10-minute walk to Forest Avenue, which is the town's little Rodeo Drive, dotted with boutique stores -- many of them owned by local artists and designers. It's a 10-minute drive down the highway to the majestic 1000 Steps Beach in South Laguna, with 230 steps leading down to the beach, which has two caves and is surrounded by dramatic cliffs. The hotel is a one-hour drive from LAX and 30 minutes from John Wayne Airport.
Rooms
Rooms can range dramatically in what you get
The hotel offers rooms as well as beach bungalows for extended stays. Some rooms have been recently upgraded. The Double Full Room is beige and white with orange splashes of color; these rooms have double beds, Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, bathrooms with showers, tubs, and marble sinks, and small patios with views of the pool. The King Surf Room is spacious and bright, each with a king-sized bed and balcony with chairs and specially-crafted seahorse mosaic tables overlooking the beach; the minibar contains everything from full bottles of hard liquor and wine, to beer and soda. The bathroom in each has a shower stall, but no tub. The Village View Rooms are darker and smaller, with turquoise walls, two double beds, a mini-fridge, and a shower stall in each; they do not have balconies. If you purchase the sea lion stuffed animals that dot the beds, the proceeds go to a seal and sea lion charity. You can also book Apartments with one or two bedrooms and kitchenettes or the Pacific Suite, which is the upper floor of a high-ceilinged former beach home that has a master bedroom and second bedroom, and overlooks the crashing waves of the Pacific. Additionally, the hotel contains five bungalows for more extended stays, each with a different designer for a unique feel. All contain large living rooms overlooking the ocean, bar areas, private oceanfront decks, and VIP Bungalow Hosts to assist with various bookings and features.

The Deck, the three-storied restaurant, contains plenty of outdoor, oceanside seating. The inside has a pub feel with wood-paneled walls, a long bar, fireplace, and several TVs. There's also outside seating around a fire pit. The food and atmosphere are good enough to attract locals who enjoy the seafood-inspired menu (shellfish, fresh fish, shrimp tacos) and signature cocktails, extensive wine list, and craft beers. There's a smallish common area pool and a large hot tub, around which guests tend to congregate despite having the beach only steps away. Most of the rooms have balconies, and oceanside rooms offer astonishingly beautiful views of the ocean and gorgeous sunsets. The hotel offers package deals geared towards beach activities such as surfing, paddle boarding, or whale watching.
