A short walk to the beach and to local shops and restaurants, the Bay Shores Peninsula Hotel is ideally located for visitors who like to get around on foot. The 25 rooms here are pleasant and have a nautical theme, and there's a large suite with a full kitchen available. Freebies such as breakfast, fresh cookies, Wi-Fi, and loaner beach equipment add value, though the property does lack a pool. The budget hotel has a homey ambiance that's part motel, part B&B.

Scene

Small hotel with B&B vibe and a cozy lobby

From the outside, this small property looks like a typical motel, with a small parking lot and two floors of rooms in a plain building. The lobby has a bit more character, with patterned carpets, floor-to-ceiling wooden cabinets, a computer for guest use, and a small seating area with plush chairs and brochures on area attractions. It's more suited for vacationers than it is for business travelers, and its intimate size plus lots of freebies (including breakfast) makes it feel a bit like a B&B.

Location

In a residential area, a one-minute walk from the beach and near shops and restaurants

The Bay Shores Peninsula Hotel is located in a residential neighborhood, a one-minute walk to the beach and about three minutes from local shops and restaurants. The ferry to Balboa Island is less than five minutes away by car or about 20 minutes on foot. Orange County's John Wayne Airport is a 15-minute drive away without traffic.

Rooms

Nautical-themed rooms with mini-fridges, and suites with full kitchens

The rooms and suites have a nautical theme, with a mix of pale yellow walls and yellow and white striped wallpaper, baby blue linens, white wood furniture, and model ship decor. The furnishings look a bit older, but are kept in decent repair. The focal point of each room is a large print by Hawaiian surf artist John Severson. Rooms come with flat-screen TVs, DVD players, free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. The Bay Suite has an electric fireplace, a large dining area that can seat up to eight people, and a kitchen with a microwave and a full-sized refrigerator. The bathrooms in rooms and suites have wall-mounted hairdryers and shower/tub combos. A nightly turndown service, complete with chocolates, is standard.

Features

Free breakfast, chocolate chip cookies, and beach equipment to borrow

A continental breakfast buffet is served every morning and fresh fruit is available throughout the day. Free freshly baked cookies are available in the lobby during the afternoon. Boogie boards and other beach equipment is available for guest use. There's also a rooftop terrace with plenty of seating and marina views, as well as a coin-operated laundry room, with free laundry detergent available for guests. Parking is free and should the hotel run out of spaces, they will feed guests' meters. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
