Bottom Line

The 159-room Balboa Bay Resort is one of Newport Beach's most upscale properties, and has excellent restaurants, a spa, plenty of meeting facilities, and an Olympic-size swimming pool. Rooms have elegant style, and all come with private balconies. The hotel is under a 10-minute drive to the sand, and has a waterfront location on a marina (part of the exclusive Balboa Bay Club). Just be aware that the resort fees, breakfast fees, and parking fees can add up, and some guests may start to feel nickel and dimed. Still, in Newport, only the Resort at Pelican Hill is more luxurious.

Scene

Spacious luxury resort with nautical theme

This airy, luxury resort is one of the nicest in Newport Beach. It's clear upon arrival that this is a posh, monied environment; there is a Ferrari dealership across the street, and the resort is situated on a marina that's home to some impressive yachts. Though the resort opened in 2003, the members-only Balboa Bay Club (with which the resort shares some facilities) has a storied past, and has welcomed celebrities such as Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, and Jerry Seinfeld. This luxury property is popular with business and leisure travelers alike. Its quiet, low-key environment, huge spa, and scenic water views make it well-suited to couples, while the extensive event facilities (including 20 meeting rooms) draw the suit and tie set. The three-story buildings that house the hotel look simple but elegant from the outside. The lobby is wide open and minimalist, with blown glass, driftwood, and nautical accents, a theme that continues throughout common areas.

Location

In the heart of Newport Beach, right on the water's edge

Located in an upscale pedestrian neighborhood of Newport Beach, the Balboa Bay Club & Resort is centrally located near boutiques, restaurants, nautical shops, and beaches (though almost nothing is within walking distance). The property is right on the water, overlooking the Balboa Bay Club's marina. There's a Ferrari dealership across the street and Orange County's John Wayne Airport is a 15-minute drive away, barring traffic.

Rooms

Large, light rooms with flat-screen TVs

The rooms at the Balboa Bay Resort are spacious. Beds have plush down duvets and all rooms come with 42-inch flat-screen TVs, DVD players, private balconies (some overlooking the bay), and Wi-Fi (included in the daily resort fee). Room service is available 24 hours a day. Bathrooms have deep soaking tubs, marble and granite surfaces, and luxury toiletries; bathrobes and slippers are provided. There are also a range of suites available; the Governor's Suite has a kitchenette. Some guests have mentioned that rooms overlooking the main road can be noisy well into the night.

Features

A big pool, a luxury spa, and a lovely waterfront gastropub

The Balboa Bay Resort draws plenty of business travelers, thanks to its large ballroom and 20-plus meeting rooms. The on-site gastropub, A&O Kitchen+Bar, and the waterfront Waterline Restaurant both offer eclectic menus with plenty of fresh seafood options. The on-site coffeeshop, Blend, sells sundries and snacks along with espresso drinks and teas. There's also a shop on the property, Bayfront Boutique, which sells women's resort wear and accessories. The fitness center is spacious, with free weights and treadmills, and the gigantic pool is surrounded by cushioned lounge chairs with personal umbrellas. There's also a small whirlpool tucked off to one side next to the pool. Paddle board and kayaks are available for rent. The full-service spa has a eucalyptus steam room, whirlpools, a sauna, and a relaxation lounge.
