The Beachwood is a clean, modern, family-owned motel off the shores of Saco Bay. Reasonably priced and with a small kitchen in each cheerfully outfitted room, The Beachwood offers a practical vacation option for budget-conscious families. There are a range of room layouts, and some may feel cramped while others are more spacious and comfortable. The patio area with several grills is nice for group dinners, while the pool and hot tubs offer alternatives to the beach. Scene

Quiet and welcoming with a barbecue patio overlooking the sand dunes

The Beachwood is a quiet, comfortable motel right off the beach. Attracting families and guests looking for ocean fun at lower prices than in nearby Kennebunkport, the motel is not fancy, but is clean, well-maintained, and generally quiet. The mid-size, sparkling blue pool and whirlpools were both renovated in 2014. Guests gather poolside on chaise lounges, and at high tables and chairs. Beyond the pool, overlooking the sand dunes, is a patio area with grills, cushioned chairs, and picnic tables for guest use. During the day, the pool area remains pretty quiet, with guests off at the beach. The Beachwood is family-run and the owners live on-site, lending a friendly, familiar feel to the scene.

Location

Oceanfront, near good food and fun

The motel is conveniently located off Old Orchard's main street, dotted with hotels and restaurants. Set on the ocean, on the shore of Saco Bay, the property is a short walk from Old Orchard’s main pier, where there are more restaurants, bars, and attractions. Next door to The Beachwood is Palace Playland, New England’s only beachfront amusement park, with roller coasters, water slides, rides, and arcade games. The motel is also around the block from the Old Orchard Beach Amtrak station, which is open from mid-spring to mid-fall.

Rooms

Modern and bright, with nice kitchens and variable layouts

The rooms at The Beachwood are clean, bright, and moderately sized, with cheerful florals or stripes, warm wood furnishings, and kitchens with modern appliances (full refrigerators, microwaves, and ovens). All rooms also have flat-screen TVs, and some have expandable tables. Kitchens can be a real cost-saving perk, but the layout of some rooms interferes with food preparation -- particularly in the Two Double Rooms. Bathrooms are moderately sized, come stocked with bath products, and have shower/tub combos.

Features

Free Wi-Fi, oceanfront communal spaces, coin-operated laundry

Like most motels, there are few features beyond the rooms themselves at The Beachwood, but the motel does have free Wi-Fi in every room, coin-operated laundry, and vending machines. Its greatest feature is the beachside location, but the pool and patio area (renovated in 2014) offers a well-designed, welcoming communal space. There are barbecues for grilling, picnic tables, and lounge chairs. The pool is sparklingly blue, with two adjacent whirlpools. The hotel is eco-friendly, with a recycling program, solar-heated water, and super-quiet AC and heating units. Guests can borrow beach chairs and umbrellas for use on the sand.
