As the only hotel on the island with multiple meeting rooms, the mid-range, 70-room Put-in-Bay Resort Hotel and Conference Center serves as a hub for corporate event weekends and business travelers. It also has a large outdoor pool area with a colossal 40-person hot tub, and a poolside restaurant with nightly entertainment. Most of the rooms are standard budget affairs with options like in-room whirlpool tubs, but its town house-style villas have full kitchens that cater to large groups in a slightly more contemporary style. Travelers looking for a similar lodging without the meeting facilities or impressive water features might want to compare rates with the nearby Bay Lodging Resort.
Scene
Mid-range hotel with a mix of budget and Caribbean-themed decor
The Put-in-Bay Resort Hotel and Conference Center is a tale of two properties, with a budget-style lodging built around a lively outdoor pool area, and an updated section across the street housing multi-story town houses. A loosely conceived Caribbean flavor attempts to tie them together, with fake palm trees and thatched huts around the pool and island-inspired flourishes throughout the hotel's interior decor. Large groups and business travelers congregate around the outdoor restaurant and bar at the main building, while across the street a manicured courtyard terrace has a fountain splash pad between contemporary patio furniture.
Location
Centrally located near dining and attractions
The hotel is centrally located on a street lined with other hotels, and is within a five-minute walk of most of the small downtown area's restaurants and bars. Put-in-Bay is the largest town, and is a popular holiday destination on South Bass Island, where walleye and perch fishing are popular pursuits. Golf Carts are the primary method of transportation, while an armada of ferries shuttle people between the islands and Sandusky Harbor on the mainland. The hotel is within a 10-minute walk of Lake Erie Islands Historical Society, and Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial, commemorating the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.
Rooms
Basic standard rooms, or large villas with kitchens
The 70 rooms are split between two distinct buildings, with Standard Rooms in a variety of options in the main building and town house-style villas across the street. The earth-toned Standard Rooms have budget-style chain decor with plain carpets and small windows. Small work desks with roller chairs come standard, along with mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs. Some rooms add balconies or in-room whirlpool tubs. The bathrooms have shower/tub combos. Note that some rooms facing the pool or the parking may get noisy, and when we visited there was a bleach odor in some. Across the street, the multi-story villas have a more colorful decor, and kitchens with coffeemakers, microwaves, and small electric stove tops. Some of the bedrooms are arranged in an open plan with no doors, which can compromise privacy. Each four- or five-bedroom villa has three bathrooms, a furnished deck, and a second-story balcony.
Features
Outdoor pool, huge hot tub, poolside restaurant, five meeting rooms, free continental breakfast
Five meeting rooms total 4,600 square feet of dedicated meeting space, with on-site catering and staff that run team-building events like scavenger hunts that have business groups searching around the property and across the island. The hotel also sells T-shirts and office supplies for conferences. On one end of the outdoor pool is a huge 40-person hot tub (the hotel boldly claims "largest in the world"), with a swim-up bar opposite that connects to the Blue Marlin Bar & Grill. It has outdoor patio seating and regular live entertainment. There's also an indoor breakfast room for the free continental breakfast. Other amenities include a small fitness center in the basement and on-site golf cart rentals with hourly and daily rates, and free Wi-Fi throughout.
