The 100-room Spinnaker has location going for it: The property is situated right in the heart of Ocean City and a few minutes' walk from the boardwalk and the beach. This budget hotel doesn't offer many amenities, though, with just an outdoor pool that overlooks a parking lot and a little café that serves breakfast and lunch. Rooms have convenient amenities that include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, private balconies, and kitchenettes, but the generic furnishings make for a chain-like feel.
Scene
A comfortable, utilitarian beach hotel
Spinnaker serves a purpose: It’s a clean, comfortable, no-frills place to stay for those visitors who want to be right by the beach, the boardwalk, and the shops, restaurants, and nightlife that comprise the heart of Ocean City. The hotel itself is a nondescript, charmless box flanked by a big parking lot and a busy road. The lobby is nothing fancy; this is a budget hotel after all, and it does not present itself as anything else. Yet, the space is bright, clean, and well-maintained. Nautical art and stacks of brochures advertising water activities set the ocean mood. The medium-size pool sometimes gets mobbed with party-hearty beach-goers and families with rowdy children in tow, but there are also plenty of quieter times.
Location
A budget hotel right by the busy boardwalk
Spinnaker is located a few minutes' walk from the buzzing Ocean City boardwalk and beach. The hotel is slightly set back from the boardwalk; one building lies between the hotel and the beach. Spinnaker is surrounded by hotels, condos, and rental properties, as well as the usually crowded shops and cafes lining the boardwalk. The property is about a six-minute drive from Jolly Roger at the Pier amusement park and a five-minute drive from the Convention Center.
Rooms
Rooms are practical but unattractive
The Spinnaker’s rooms are clean and include fully-equipped kitchens, private balconies, and sofa beds. Rooms also have a retractable wall between the sofa bed area and the rest of the room, which creates added privacy. However, the decor is somewhat run-of-the-mill, with uninspired furniture and drab carpeting that make for a chain-like feel. Spinnaker is a good option for beachgoers who want to pile into a room to save money. A 32-inch, flat-screen TV and free Wi-Fi in each room are welcome touches.
Features
A charming cafe and a medium-size pool, but little else
Spinnaker features a cute cafe serving comfort food and healthy options (including vegetarian dishes) that’s open daily for breakfast and lunch, as well as an outdoor pool, and a large sundeck. The pool and sundeck are nice, if you don’t mind being surrounded by concrete (they are perched above a busy road and a sprawling parking lot). Freebies include parking and Wi-Fi. The property offers little else in the way of amenities, with its prime location close to the beach and boardwalk being its main draw for guests.
