Bottom Line
A large, mid-range hotel that caters to mature couples, families, and large groups, the Clarion Resort Fontainebleau overflows with amenities: nightclub, fitness center, playground, pet park, gift shop, indoor and outdoor pools, four bars, a restaurant, and a health spa with a sauna, steam room, and whirlpool. A variety of clean (if slightly dated) rooms are available, including bi-level cabanas with spiral staircases near the pool. A path offers direct beach access, and it's about a 10-minute drive from the boardwalk. This is one of the only pet-friendly hotels in Ocean City, and one of only two that sells liquor on the sand.

Scene
Large, full-service hotel serving guests of all types
Upon entering its spacious, renovated lobby, it's clear that the hotel aims to deliver all the amenities one would expect from a full-service hotel of its size. It's overflowing with features, and draws around an equal number of families and couples. The fact that it's one of only two hotels in Ocean City to sell liquor on the beach certainly doesn't hurt its appeal with adults, and there are plenty of them to be found sipping cocktails on the sand and by the pool. There are live bands in season playing 70s, 80s, and 90s hits (think: Jimmy Buffet), and middle-aged couples can be found hitting the dance floor. The slightly higher price point of this hotel means that the crowd skews a little bit older than at some other properties.
This is also a hub for business travelers and convention-goers, thanks to the 40,000-square-foot on-site conference center, there’s a fair share of convention-goers. Families typically congregated at the outdoor pool, and will likely appreciate the large condo suites equipped with mini-fridges and microwaves.
Those familiar with the luxurious Fontainebleau in Miami should note that there is no relationship between the properties; the hotel is decidedly mid-range.
Location
Beachfront location conveniently located a short drive from the heart of Ocean City
While the hotel entrance is located on the main highway that runs through Ocean City, on the ocean side there is a path with direct beach access. The hotel has two beachfront restaurants and is less than a 10-minute drive to the boardwalk, Jolly Roger at the Pier amusement park (home to the city’s landmark ferris wheel), and the Convention Center. The highway make it a less walkable neighborhood than other locations.
Rooms
Spacious rooms with standing-only ocean-view balconies, free Wi-Fi, microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers
Rooms here are spacious, if a bit dated -- think striped sofas, wall-to-wall carpeting, and popcorn stucco ceilings. A variety of rooms are available, including Studio King Size rooms, two-floor Cabanas, and Double Double rooms. The balconies are for standing only and are therefore tiny, offering little privacy. Mini-fridges, microwaves and coffeemakers come standard in every room. Full kitchens or limited kitchens are available in cabanas and suites. The flat-screen TVs offer free HBO. The hotel owns also owns condominium suites next door on the beach that include access to the hotel's amenities and have large balconies.
Features
A pet-friendly hotel with indoor and outdoor pools, a large fitness center, and spa
The hotel has a beachfront location and a huge array of features designed to satisfy every type of traveler. Those looking to party will appreciate the live bands in season, as well as the nightclub. The property is both kid- and pet-friendly, with a playground, video arcade, and pet park. The indoor pool is located under a skylight, and the heated outdoor pool -- where families tend to congregate -- has plastic loungers and drink service. The health spa is equipped with a sauna, steam room, and whirlpool, and the big mirrored fitness center has lots of cardio and strength-training equipment.
There are two restaurants on-site -- for more options, guests will have to drive. The aptly named Horizons Oceanfront is, in fact, oceanfront, and serves three meals a day; both a breakfast buffet and a dinner buffet (with crab legs, seafood, and prime rib) are on offer. Breakers Pub and Raw Bar has happy hour specials, and Lenny's Beach Bar & Grill serves casual American fare and cocktails; this is where guests will find live music in season.
A kids' program is offered during the summer, and includes sessions with Lollipop the Clown, a magician, and a bodyboarding instructor.
