Bottom Line

On a quiet hillside overlooking Chahue Bay, the 32-room mid-range Hotel Princess Mayev Huatulco is a laid-back value option. Rooms are spacious and have stunning bay or city views plus flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning. Some even include small kitchens. The secluded property features a lovely open-air restaurant serving a traditional Mexican breakfast, and international menus at other times. Room service is available through the restaurant. Chahue Beach is only a 10-minute walk away, and the hotel has two lovely pools, including an infinity option, making it popular with families and couples. Those looking for a little more quiet might consider Camino Real Zaashila, which features similar amenities and is closer to the beach, but at a consistently higher price tag.

Scene

Secluded, relaxed hotel with a small social scene throughout the day

Hotel Princess Mayev is perched on a hill overlooking the Chahue Bay. Situated on a side street, away from the hustle and bustle of Huatulco, the secluded hotel has a laid-back and relaxed ambience. Throughout the day and into the night, the infinity pool tends to be the main area for socializing. Travelers can expect to see families with children playing, socializing, and sunbathing throughout the day; while at night, some families have small parties out by the pool with music and a little bit of drinking. Xima Lounge tends to be busy during peak meal hours, with plenty of families and couples socializing. During off-peak hours, it’s not uncommon to see a few guests enjoying the tranquil atmosphere of the open-air restaurant. With a small side pool, and balconies on all the rooms, travelers can choose how much they wish to interact with other guests, though in general, while the hotel is relaxed, it's not altogether tranquil.

Location

In a quiet corner of Huatulco, a 10-minute walk to Chahue Beach

Perched on a hill overlooking Chahue Bay, Hotel Princess Mayev Huatulco has stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and a quieter setting than properties right in town. It's a 10-minute walk, or a three-minute drive, to the golden sands of popular Chahue Beach. Boulevard Chahue has traditional Mexican street food -- tacos, tamales, and tostadas -- as well as the Super Che mega-store, and is an eight-minute walk or four-minute drive from the hotel. La Crucecita is 12-minute walk, or six-minute drive from the hotel, where guests can find restaurants, bars, and markets. The restaurants and shops of Santa Cruz are a six-minute drive, or a 25-minute walk from the hotel. It will take five minutes to reach Huatulco National Park by car, where there are plenty of nature trails, while the 18 holes of Las Parotas Golf Club are a seven-minute drive away. Guests should allow 20 minutes to reach Huatulco International Airport by car. Taxis are easy to find along Santa Cruz Boulevard.

Rooms

Spacious rooms with city or ocean views, all with balconies or patios

Picking your room at the Hotel Princess Mayev determines your view of Huatulco. Guests have a choice of either City View or Ocean View Rooms, though the look is similar across the board. All are spacious, and include queen or king-size beds made up in orange bedspreads that look a little dated. Some of the older rooms are a bit smaller and more simple furniture, like folding chairs and tables. All rooms have modern dressers, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning, but no mini-fridges (in most). The highlight of all of the rooms are the spacious balconies or patios, and those on the ground floor lead directly to the pool. However, it's worth noting that noise from the pool can be heard from poolside rooms. There are a few rooms that have small kitchens with microwaves, hot plates, mini-fridges, and a handful of dishes. Bathrooms are small to moderately sized. All bathrooms have standing showers, which are also small to adequately sized. The bathrooms have separate vanity space, plenty of towels, and toiletries. Hairdryers are included.

Features

Open-air restaurant, two pools including infinity pool, plenty of self-parking, free Wi-Fi

Hotel Princess Mayev offers a pared-down list of amenities relative to the area’s other larger resorts. What's on offer, though, does add value to a stay here. It has a single restaurant -- the open-air Xima Lounge -- which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The decor is rustic-chic with brown wicker chairs, a straw thatched roof, and bamboo railing. Breakfast includes a mix of continental fare -- pastries, fresh fruit, and juices -- as well as eggs, chilaquiles, and molletes. Lunch and dinner are an international menu that's heavily influenced by Mexican flavors. Room service is available for an extra fee. Below the restaurant is a spacious infinity pool overlooking the Chahue Bay. There are a handful of black lounge chairs for guests to use, as well as wooden sunshade with tables and chairs. The pool tends to be fairly busy with families and children playing and socializing. There's also a smaller side pool at the back of the hotel, which is enclosed by a bamboo fence -- it's a better option for guests who prefer quiet, though the pool is small. There is plenty of shaded self-parking for guests, and the hotel has an ATM. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
