Trump International Hotel Waikiki is an ocean-view luxury property located a nine-minute walk from world famous Waikiki Beach. The 350 apartment-style units have bright, earth-toned interiors, high-end kitchens (or kitchenettes), and private balconies (some with ocean views). There are some major downsides. Namely, the outdoor pool is stylish but small, restaurants are expensive, and many of the ocean views are obstructed. Three restaurants get mostly positive reviews and serve seafood, international cuisine, and steaks. Hotel amenities include a 24-hour gym, small spa, valet parking for a fee, and free Wi-Fi that's painfully slow. Families should note that strollers are free to borrow and free beach bags come with fruit, towels, and water. For a sleek oceanfront stay with multiple pools and free kayaks to use, the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina is an excellent luxury alternative -- but rates are higher.
Scene
Sophisticated atmosphere with high end decor and lots of breezy open-air spaces
Trump International opened in 2009 and unlike some Trump-licensed properties, it doesn’t scream Donald. Sure it sells branded shirts saying “Aloha from Trump Hotel,” but the decor is sleek and sophisticated as opposed to garish. The breezy, partially open air-lobby is located on the eighth-floor and has minimalist accents like plush baby blue armchairs, off-white low-backed couches, and an enormous light fixture of dimly-lit glass orbs. Native Hawaiian art throughout the public areas adds a sense of place. The huge terrace has panoramic views of Fort Derussy Beach Park's grassy fields. Trump International’s upper floor hallways are pretty dark, a common Waikiki occurrence, but standout with their stylish distressed coconut tile walls. The hotel’s definitely a family-friendly property and caters especially to parents with kids under the age of 2. All the kid amenities come with a caveat though: the otherwise serene infinity pool gets filled up with loud, splashing kids. A majority of the hotel’s guests are Japanese, but it also attracts a number of American, Canadian, and European travelers.
Location
Three-minute walk to Waikiki beaches, near restaurants and shops -- fabulous firework views
Trump International’s located on Waikiki's western edge and is a three-minute walk from the beach. It’s not the famed Waikiki Beach though -- that’s a nine-minute stroll from the hotel. It’s worth nothing that Hilton Hotel’s Friday night fireworks are set off across the park, so the Trump has fabulous fireworks views. Within a five-minute walk of the hotel are shops, convenience stores, a ukulele store, and restaurants serving fast food, sandwiches, and international cuisines. Honolulu Zoo is a six-minute drive from the hotel. Just a bit farther, at seven minutes, is the oceanfront Waikiki Aquarium. Diamond Head State Monument, a huge crater park with breathtaking views of Waikiki and Honolulu from its peak (a 45-minute uphill hike) takes an 11-minute car ride to get to. Downtown Honolulu, the Iolani Palace, and Chinatown are a 15-minute drive from Trump International. Hanuama Bay, one of the island’s most stunning and pristine beaches is a 26-minute drive. Honolulu International Airport is about a 20-minute drive from the Trump International.
Rooms
Executive-style rooms with kitchens (or kitchenettes) and marble bathrooms
Trump International’s rooms are bright, modern, and huge -- but they look more like an urban executive apartment than a tropical vacation retreat. Categories are a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartment-style unit’s with floor-to-ceiling windows. Off-white walls are decorated with earth-toned flower paintings and beautifully carved canoe paddles. Bed configurations are a mix of one king bed or two twin beds, and some units add plush sleeper sofas. All rooms have full kitchens or kitchenettes with marble counters and Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances. They’re also loaded with coffeemakers, rice makers, blenders, electric tea kettles, fridges, and free bottled water. Forty-two inch flat-screen TVs with cable and premium channels are standard, and phones feature integrated plugs for charging most mobile phone brands. DVD players and Nintendo Wii game systems can be borrowed. Unfortunately, the free Wi-Fi is painfully slow. Safes, irons, ironing boards, robes, monogrammed slippers, flashlights, and shoehorns are standard. Big, marble-countered bathrooms have either shower/tub combos or separate showers and soaking bathtubs. Open-plan showers tend to soak the bathroom floors. Bathroom also include washlet bidet toilets, Trump and Natura Bisse toiletries, hairdryers, illuminated magnifying mirrors, and scales. Most -- but not all -- rooms have furnished balconies, but the ocean views are often partially obstructed by nearby buildings. For an added fee, the hotel can provide private chefs, groceries, and butler service.
Features
Sleek infinity pool, three restaurants, spa, 24-hour gym, and lots of baby amenities
Features cater to both vacationers and business travelers, with extra love shown to families with small kids. The heated infinity pool is downright gorgeous. Its sleek lines, built-in hot tub, and lots of loungers make it a serene spot, but it’s surprisingly small. It’s worth noting that kids can take over the pool. The hotel’s pricy restaurants get mostly positive reviews. Wai’Olu Ocean Cuisine serves seafood, sushi, and steaks for lunch and dinner. In-Yo Cafe has a breakfast buffet and an omelet station, not included in the rates. There’s an independently-owned BLT Steakhouse on-site. Twenty-four hour room service is available, as is beachfront food delivery. The Spa at Trump offers services including manicures, pedicures, facials, and massages -- couples' treatment rooms are available. It sells a variety of gifts and beauty items (including Trump-branded products). The 24-hour gym is stocked with Techno Gym treadmills, elliptical machines, stair climbers, stationary bicycles, recumbent bicycles, dumbbells, and weight machines. A nice plus are the free fruit, headphones, and cold towels. Yoga classes and personal training sessions are available for a fee. The hotel stands out with its kids amenities (catering to all those under 2 toddlers who fly to Hawaii for free on parent's laps). Expect free swim diapers, diaper pails, strollers, playpens, baby bath products, kids' slippers and robes, strollers to borrow, and free room baby-proofing. Beach bags are filled with towels, bottled water, and fruit for easy toting to the beach. The guest lounge has Mac and personal computers, free printing, and free newspapers. Free, slow Wi-Fi is provided throughout the hotel, although upgraded speeds are available for a fee.The hotel can arrange tours, car rentals, airport transfers, and babysitters. Meeting rooms are available. There’s valet parking for a fee
