Bottom Line

Lanikai Bed and Breakfast is a great destination for couples or group travelers who want to experience Hawaii in a relaxing, lazy beach town. The family-run B&B is located near a beach in the residential area of Kailua, on the cooler, less crowded, windward side of the island of Oahu. There are two suite-style rooms, both with kitchenettes. Amenities are basically non-existent (there's no pool, restaurant, or gym), but the trade-off is that guests get the authentic experience of local Hawaiian living with gracious hosts.

Scene

Charming and authentic Hawaiian accommodations

Lanikai Bed and Breakfast feels more like a family homestay than a hotel. This two-unit B&B is part of a house that has a lush, private outdoor space with seating, an enclosed backyard, and a resident dog. The hosts, Rick and Nini, live in the building, but are unobtrusive -- yet helpful when needed. Both units have private entrances.

Location

A B&B on the windward, less-touristy side of the island of Oahu

The B&B sits at the end of a long road in a residential area of Kailua. It's a three-minute walk from a small, usually empty beach. This part of the beach does tend to disappear during high tide, but a five-minute walk will take guests to a larger area of Lanikai Beach. Downtown Kailua, where there are many shops, restaurants, and supermarkets, is a 20-minute walk or a five-minute drive away.

Rooms

Clean, bright suites that evoke authentic island living

There are two units in the Lanikai Bed and Breakfast: the treehouse suite on the second floor, and the garden studio on the ground floor. The two-bedroom, one-bathroom upper unit is not a true treehouse, but feels like one because of the lush trees that surround the property. The garden studio is a studio-style apartment with doors leading to the private backyard. Both units are clean and bright with lots of windows that fill the space with natural light, bamboo floors, and rattan furniture accented with Hawaiian prints that give the suites an authentic beachy vibe. Both units come with kitchenettes and flat-screen TVs. They also have private entrances, and although there is no air conditioning, the units are kept cool with ocean breezes.

Features

Wi-Fi, basketball, and outdoor seating

Lanikai Bed and Breakfast doesn't have many of the special features you'd find in a larger resort, but its live-like-a-local atmosphere makes it a good choice for those wanting a more immersive travel experience. There's a basketball hoop out front, an enclosed backyard, free Wi-Fi, and beach equipment that guests can borrow at no cost.
