This BEST WESTERN The Plaza Hotel is an airport hotel with
an outdoor pool and a handy free shuttle, but its location under a freeway in a
rundown part of town that leaves little else to recommend. The restaurant has a
daily breakfast but keeps an odd dinner schedule that's inconvenient for
weekday guests. Business travelers and those with overnight layovers in need of
the basics will find that the dated rooms have useful amenities, including
mini-fridges and microwaves, along with some of the least appealing views in
Honolulu. The nearby Airport Honolulu Hotel tends to have slightly
cheaper rates for nearly the same amenities.
Scene
Big chain by the airport
BEST WESTERN The Plaza Hotel is within
walking distance of Honolulu International Airport and under the H1
freeway, so it’s not surprising that it gets a lot of noise pollution. Still, given
the heavy traffic, the hotel is surprisingly welcoming inside and even has a
little Hawaiian flair. Wood furnishings break from typical big chain decor and
details like interesting tree stump tables add personality. The molded
ceiling is inset with several fake glass skylights, complete with an overhead
view of a painted sky and palm trees.
Location
Between the H1 Freeway and the airport, within driving distance of downtown and Waikiki
Under the H1 Queen Liliuokalani Freeway,
the hotel's neighbors largely consist of car rental companies, with little more
than a dive bar and Starbucks within walking distance. Downtown Honolulu is
around a 15-minute drive southeast and Waikiki is about a 20-minute drive in
the same direction; both locales are easily accessed from the freeway. Military
personnel staying at the hotel may find it convenient that Joint Base Pearl
Harbor-Hickam and Tripler Army Medical Center are both about a 10-minute drive
from the property.
Rooms
Tropical print decor along with small windows and all the basics
The Plaza Hotel's 274 rooms have
windows so small they would normally be a big negative, but here they're
intended to help minimize the heavy traffic noise from the freeway outside.
Tropical leaf pattern prints cover carpets, curtains, and budget-style bed
throws. Light gray furniture consists of a small table and a convenient
dressing table that's partially devoted to a coffeemaker. Other standard
amenities include mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and microwaves as well as free
Wi-Fi. The simple bathrooms are cramped with dated shower/tub combos.
Pet-friendly and handicap-accessible rooms are available as well.
Features
Plaza cafe, outdoor pool, meeting rooms, and free airport shuttle
An outdoor pool has a stone sun deck with palm
trees towering above lounge chairs and a few tables, but the freeway puts a
damper on the view. The Plaza Cafe restaurant serves a daily breakfast,
but dinner service is limited to certain days. The hotel operates a free
shuttle with the nearby Airport Honolulu Hotel to eat at their
restaurant on off days (and vice versa). There’s also a small on-site store
that sells snacks, souvenirs, and other sundries. Four function rooms can
be flexibly arranged for business meetings or banquets, with a larger ballroom
that can hold up to 200 guests. Though the airport is within walking
distance, most will appreciate the free 24-hour airport shuttle. Free Wi-Fi is
also available throughout the property.
