The 44-story, 740-room Aqua Skyline at Island Colony is Waikiki's tallest hotel, sitting conveniently near a wide array of shops, restaurants, bars, and nightlife, with the beach only blocks away. Aqua Skyline is a combination hotel and condominium, and rooms vary in amenities, cleanliness, and quality based on ownership. Those who want a more consistent hotel experience and a location closer to the sand may want to consider the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort and Spa.
Scene
Open-air lobby and weekly rooftop cocktail party
Aqua Skyline at Island Colony is an apartment hotel and condominium community with a large open-air lobby dotted with somewhat dated sofas, stone floors, rock walls, and a grab-and-go cafe. The skyscraper property offers city and canal views, with picnic areas and gas grills on the grounds. A pool and hot tub are available as well. Aqua Skyline hosts a weekly rooftop cocktail party for guests to socialize and enjoy panoramic views of the city. There’s no sit-down restaurant or bar on-site, but rooms have kitchenettes and the area is filled with dining options.
Location
In the Waikiki mix, near beach by foot and convention center by car
Aqua Skyline is an urban hotel in the heart of Waikiki, surrounded by shops, restaurants, and nightlife, including a popular gay bar. Tourists will find Waikiki Beach about a 10-minute walk away, while business travelers can get to the Hawaii Convention Center via a five-minute drive. The hotel has panoramic views of the city and mountains, but the surrounding area is busy and traffic noise can be an issue. Grocery stores and takeout restaurants can be found in the immediate vicinity for visitors who want to stock their kitchens.
Rooms
Kitchenettes, private balconies, and beautiful views, though bathrooms are small
All Aqua Skyline rooms -- studios and suites -- are renovated and have kitchenettes with microwaves, coffeemakers, two-burner stovetops, and mini-fridges. (Bathroom sinks double as kitchen sinks.) Rooms are very clean and understated, decorated with a nod to the tropics: island-themed headboards and palm tree/bird-of-paradise printed bedspreads. Stocked with organic, papaya-based toiletries by PAYA, bathrooms are on the small side, with some complaints of low showerheads. Every room has a private balcony for enjoying city and mountain views.
Features
Outdoor pool, gas grills, and smoothie cafe
Aqua Skyline has a sixth-floor outdoor pool with lounge chairs, picnic tables, and community gas grills, as well as a hot tub and sauna. Jagger's Cafe in the lobby offers grab-and-go snacks and refreshing smoothies, and the on-site Island Colony Aloha Mart is a well-stocked convenience store for flip-flops, sunscreen, and plenty more. The property has a fitness center and guest laundry services as well.
