Scene

Family-friendly camping site

Guests access the property by driving under a stone gate with an orange tiled roof. The lobby is all business with just a wooden reception desk and some brochures. The public facilities like the ATM and cafeteria are housed together near two outdoor swimming pools while the camping spot and bungalows are grouped together on green grass. Staff navigates the property via golf cart while guests mostly use bikes. Huge exotic animal sculptures dot the zoo area, and the campsite largely attracts families looking for an outdoorsy, budget-friendly vacation.

Location

In a nature preserve adjacent to Ris Beach

The campsite is built in the nature reserve of Trasmiera Ecopark in the town of Noja on Ris Beach. The beach is connected to other sandy beaches along the coast, making it an ideal spot for long beach walks. Though the property looks and feels isolated (in a good way for most) Santander airport is just about a 40-minute drive away. The area is convenient for tourists with cars who often drive up and down the coast to explore Spanish villages and coastal towns.

Rooms

Campsites or private bungalows that sleep up to five people

Generously sized campsites equipped with electricity are available for guests who want to pitch their own tent and use clean communal bathroom facilities. There isn't much privacy between the pitches and in the high-season management doesn't allow guests to choose their own spot. Pitches near trees offer shade but the spots by the beach are the most popular. Two types of bungalow are available for guests who want full kitchens and protection from the elements. Bungalow Basic options are smaller and closer together, though they do include a flat-screen TV and kitchen facilities in each. Bathrooms are tiny. Bungalow Plus offer more square footage and more modern decor with lightwood furniture and stainless steel sinks. Bunk beds are fun for kids. Wall cupboards are provided for storing clothes. All bungalows have private, covered front decks and patches of grass with sun loungers. Kitchen facilities include electric burners, a small electric oven, and a sink. Some bungalows are quite a distance from the beach.

Features

Beach access, two swimming pools, a zoo, and a supermarket on-site

The features at Camping Playa Joyel are fun and functional. There's a zoo with farm animals, bunnies, and deer. In the summer, staff is on hand to help kids feed the animals. The swimming pools are nicely sized but can get crowded. A lifeguard is on staff there and at the public beaches in the summer. Tennis courts, basketball courts, and a kid's playground are all outdoors. There's an indoor game room with everything from mini-golf to video games to billiards. The on-site supermarket and bakery has a wide variety of fresh food and wine. Past guests report reasonable prices. A cafeteria overlooking the pools sells casual fare and alcohol. Other convenient on-site amenities include a beauty salon, infirmary, coin-operated laundry machines, and an ATM.
