The 38-room Hotel Suisse on the French Riviera in Nice, France, has one of the best views in the city from its seaside-facing rooms. The upper-mid-range hotel is also located close to Nice's major attractions, such as the Promenade des Anglais and Vieux Nice (the old town). It's a 15-minute drive to the Nice Côte d'Azur Airport and guests can take buses or trains to Monaco (approximately 45 minutes). For a similar old-style hotel steps from the beach but with much more glamour and a slightly higher price point, try the Hotel Negresco.
Scene
Classic, and dated beachfront Nice style
The Hotel Suisse on the French Riviera in Nice is a pretty, Italian-style building with oval-shaped glass doors and a red-and-white facade. The inside of the hotel is nothing spectacular, the hallways are narrow and dim, the white lobby is bright but basic, but the hotel has swoon-inducing views of the shimmering blue waters of Baie des Anges. The hotel is located in the most desirable area of Nice, at the end of the famous famous Promenade des Anglais. The building is located at the bottom of a hill and has a lovely garden. The cafeteria-style breakfast room contains white tables and maroon chairs and some tables overlook the bay. The bar is cute and modern but extremely small, with only four bar seats. There's no restaurant or large bar, but, given that most everything you'll want is a very short walk away, you won't be doing much more than sleeping at the hotel.
Location
Perfect waterfront location for tourists who want to enjoy the bay, promenade, and city
Located directly on Baie des Anges, French Riviera, the hotel is a quick walk down to the pebbly beaches. The hotel is also within walking distance to the winding, historic cobblestone streets, farmers markets, and antique shops of Vieux Nice (the old town), as well as the famous Promenade des Anglais, with its strolling families, bicyclists, and skateboarders; here, you can relax on the promenade's famous blue chairs or cabanas and enjoy the azure waters of Baie des Anges. The hotel is also close to Colline du Chateau (Castle Hill), which has spectacular sunset views, and Armente Garden. It's a 15-minute drive to the Nice Côte d'Azur Airport and you can take a bus or train to Monaco (approximately 45 minutes).
Rooms
Small rooms with spectacular views and small private balconies
Rooms at the Hotel Suisse are simple and elegant. Privilege and Superior Rooms are small but bright, with a double bed and floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto a narrow, red-tiled balcony with a gorgeous view of the sea. Colors are muted white and brown or maroon, with a thick brown or maroon carpet. Each room has a flat-screen TV, safe, small closet, and Nespresso maker. There's also a small minibar fridge stocked with juice, Champagne, soda, and mini-liquor bottles. The bathrooms are updated and modern with a combination tub and hand-held shower, tiled walls, heated towel rods, and hairdryer. Spacious Rooms look the same but are larger, with a queen-size bed and slightly larger closet. Oval glass doors open onto the small balcony and its breath-taking view of the bay and Nice's orange-roofed buildings, with palm trees peeking over the wrought-iron balcony. There is a street directly below the windows, so lower floors might experience some noise with the windows open. Higher floors will be quieter, but lower floors have a more private balcony. If small rooms bother you, definitely book a Spacious Room. There are some reports of noise heard from adjacent rooms and noisy plumbing.
Features
Minimal hotel features; guests are here for the view
The main feature of the hotel is its location and spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea. There is a small bar and decent-size, bright breakfast room that overlooks the azure waters of the bay, but no on-site restaurant. Breakfast comes at a fee, but can be delivered to rooms upon request. There's free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, and the beach is just across the street.
