Historic Davy House B&B Inn

Situated in a beautiful, two-story homestead that dates to 1842, the Davy House is the ultimate bed-and-breakfast experience. The owners, Flo and Jeff, have a flair for decorating and landscaping that's apparent throughout. Flo creates her own colorful wreaths and teddy bear decor, both of which are on display throughout the inn, and common areas are stocked with crafty and antique furniture and pieces. Classic rocking chairs sit across a wide porch and there is a covered bench swing on one side of the grounds, including a lovely, fish-filled pond and a putting green. The place has an unmistakably warm, homey feel, and fits in perfectly with Niagara-on-the-Lake's relaxed Nantucket-by-way-of-Lake-Ontario vibe. There are plenty of places to kick back throughout, and the decor is charming, but may be too much for guests who prefer simple, chic spaces. The inn caters to adult couples, and many guests are older couples who have frequented Davy House for years.  

The Davy House is located in a quiet residential neighborhood within a five-minute walk of Niagara-on-the-Lake's The Landmark Shops shopping area along Queen Street, the Shaw Festival Theatre, and several restaurants. Many wineries can be reached in 10 minutes by car and the Niagara River is four blocks away. There are plenty of major sights in the area for history buffs as well, including Fort Mississauga and the Battlefield of Fort George Historic Sight, which can be reached in 15 to 20 minutes on foot, or five minutes by car. The Ontario Lake lakefront at Mississauga Beach is a five-minute drive away and the Canadian side of Niagara Falls is a 30-minute drive down the road. Buffalo Niagara International Airport is about an hour’s drive from the property and Toronto Pearson International Airport is an hour and 25 minutes’ drive away.

The four rooms at this inn have each received a lot of thought and love. Each room is chock-full of crafts, like homemade wreaths, teddy bears, hearts, and clocks, as well as dried flowers, antique boxes, chairs, tables, and cabinets. Rooms evoke at stay in a country cottage and each has a soft-colored theme, from peach to yellow to red. Though comfy armchairs come in nearly every room, some rooms can feel a bit small (though Room 1844 is larger and has a pullout couch). Beds are excellent and topped with colorful duvets and decorative throw pillows, and all rooms include small flat-screen TVs and hardwood floors. On the whole, bathrooms are cramped, but attractive and spotless, with modern glass or stone-tiled shower, toiletries, plush towels, and bathrobes. Most rooms have a fireplace and every room comes with free welcome bottles of water. 

Without a doubt, the highlight of any stay at the Davy House is the handmade gourmet breakfast that features everything from stuffed French toast to eggs and granola to Flo's fresh-baked pastries. Menus vary day to day, meaning meals won't get boring, which is important as guests are required to stay a minimum of two nights. Though the inn has a distinct country cottage vibe, it also has modern features, such as free Wi-Fi access in rooms. There is a covered hot tub on site for guest usage and a putting green surrounding the koi pond, and the grounds themselves are lovely enough for a short stroll, or a relaxing afternoon in one of the lounge chairs on sunny days. The inn offers free off-street parking (one car per guest room) and the owners deserve a special mention and will go out of the way to help guests with any lunch and dinner recommendations as those meals are not provided by the inn.
