Every room at the Yankee Peddler Inn has a different configuration, thanks to the nature of the historic mansion’s architecture, but all are perfectly sufficient as far as size goes. Although the decor could use a facelift -- there are old tube TVs and boring artwork on the walls -- rooms do have charming touches (some have four-poster canopy beds). Ground are attractive (think: climbing ivy, potted plants), the roof deck is lovely, and rates are more affordable than at other properties nearby, making this a solid, centrally located value option in pricey Newport.

This B&B is a mix of historic and just plain dated
Originally built as a sea captain’s home, The Yankee Peddler Inn is one of the oldest inns in Newport. It’s managed to retain the charms of the architecture -- though some guests don't see this as a good thing, as the decor can feel outdated. There is a lack of natural light in many of the rooms, which may be an issue for some guests.There aren’t a lot of common areas at the inn. Only the breakfast room in the basement and the rooftop garden, which is beautiful when the weather cooperates.

Close to downtown but away from busy main streets
This inn is smack in the heart of downtown, yet off the main streets so it's not too noisy. It's two blocks from the harbor as well.Newport is famous for the restored, historic New England mansions dotting the coast and its downtown area. Architecture and history buffs will find plenty to explore in the National Historic Landmark District, at the Newport Historical Society, and all along Bellevue Avenue where some of the most impressive homes are located, such as the famous Breakers Mansion. Some of the mansions are open for guided tours.Aside from being rich in history and architecture, Newport also plays hosts to a number of music and film festivals each year, including the Newport Jazz Festival (past performers include Miles Davis and Duke Ellington), Newport Folk Festival in Fort Adams State Park, and Newport International Film Festival.Tennis, yachting, and golf are popular in Newport, as you might be expect of an area teeming with wealthy individuals. The International Tennis Hall of Fame and the Newport Country Club are both in town.If nature is more your thing, check out Gooseberry Beach located on Ocean Drive or enjoy the extremely popular Cliff Walk. It’s been designated a National Recreation Trail and runs about 3.5 miles along the shore.Sometimes you just want to shop and eat, however. Downtown Newport is bursting with shops, cute boutiques and galleries. Rooms are decorated in Victorian fashion with canopy beds and antique-style furnishings. Some of the bathrooms are small, almost cramped, with small stand-up showers, but given the historic nature of the building, the varying sizes and shapes of the rooms is to be expected. The decor is a bit dated -- no flat-screen TVs or luxury linens -- but rooms are comfortable enough, and a good value.The rooms in the Carriage House are more spacious and offer much more natural light.- Free Wi-Fi
