Central location in downtown Newport, at Christie's Landing
Some rooms have water views with (tiny) balconies
Free expanded continental breakfast daily
Free coffee, tea, and cookies daily; wine and cheese on weekends
Free Wi-Fi
Free parking
2 boats available for harbor tours
Rooms are outdated and somewhat unattractive
Tube TVs and less-than-stellar carpeting
No elevator
No restaurants or bars
The rooms at this small inn aren't very impressive, with tube TVs and basic furniture, and there are no restaurants or bars on-site. But for the price, the Harborside's prime location on Christie’s Wharf, within walking distance of many of Newport’s sights, can't be beat. Free parking in the hard-to-park downtown area is a bonus.
Scene
All about the location, not the frills
There's no real "scene" here -- the Harborside is about the basics, not the frills. There's just one common area on the property, a nautically decorated breakfast room where you can enjoy an expanded continental breakfast daily, fresh-baked cookies in the afternoons, and free wine and cheese on the weekends.
This inn is all about the location. Situated right in the middle of Christie’s Wharf, adjacent to the Harbor, there’s not much you won’t be able to walk to from the property. But if you do bring a car, you can park it for free at the inn -- a huge bonus given the lack of public spots in the area.
Location
On Christie's Wharf, right off Thames Street -- a prime location at affordable price
Harborside Inn has a spot right by Newport Harbor, walking distance to plenty of shopping and dining downtown.
Newport is located in Rhode Island, and is famous for the restored, historic New England mansions dotting the coast and its downtown area. Architecture and history buffs will find plenty to explore in the National Historic Landmark District, at the Newport Historical Society, and all along Bellevue Avenue where some of the most impressive homes are located, such as the famous Breakers Mansion. Some of the mansions are open for guided tours.
Aside from being rich in history and architecture, Newport also plays hosts to a number of music and film festivals each year, including the Newport Jazz Festival (past performers include Miles Davis and Duke Ellington), Newport Folk Festival in Fort Adams State Park, and Newport International Film Festival.
Tennis, yachting, and golf are popular in Newport, as you might be expect of an area teeming with wealthy individuals. The International Tennis Hall of Fame and the Newport Country Club are both in town.
If nature is more your thing, check out Gooseberry Beach located on Ocean Drive or enjoy the extremely popular Cliff Walk. It’s been designated a National Recreation Trail and runs about 3.5 miles along the shore.
Sometimes you just want to shop and eat, however. Downtown Newport is bursting with shops, cute boutiques and galleries. After you’ve exhausted your credit card and feet, pop into one of the many waterfront restaurants serving up fresh seafood and other local cuisine.
Rooms
Rooms are average at best -- there's nothing standout about them
There's nothing impressive about the rooms here -- basic furniture, no real decor, old tube TVs. But they are spacious enough and fairly comfortable (though some guests complain about uncomfortable linens). There is a mini-fridge in each room, which is convenient. And the bathrooms have been updated so they look more modern, though they aren't huge.
Waterfront rooms have a nice view of the harbor, but a downside is that the noise from nearby nightlife can be loud at night. The balconies are a nice perk, but they are small and barely fit two people comfortably.
